Google just introduced Googlebook, and yes, that’s the name

Google has introduced five new premium laptops under one surprisingly simple name: Googlebook.

Google has a new laptop brand, and apparently the company has decided that naming things doesn’t need to be complicated anymore. Meet Googlebook.

Yes, Googlebook.

The company introduced Googlebook as a new category of premium laptops on September 21, positioning it as a step above the familiar Chromebook lineup. And if you’re getting a strange The Lion King feeling from the name, you’re definitely not alone. There’s something about saying “Googlebook” out loud that makes it sound like a dramatic Disney-era proclamation: “Everything the light touches is our Googlebook.”

Google, please continue. I’m genuinely curious where this naming journey goes next.

Jokes aside, Googlebook is a fairly serious hardware push. Google is launching five premium models made with Acer, ASUS, Dell, HP, and Lenovo, with prices starting at $899. Rather than selling one standardized laptop, Google is offering several designs aimed at different types of users.

Acer’s model is the convertible, ASUS is going after portability with a 2.2-pound laptop, Dell is taking the more flashy route, HP is emphasizing its design, and Lenovo is offering a 15-inch model aimed at productivity.

The hardware is clearly meant to feel premium, too. Google says the laptops use materials including aluminum, magnesium alloy, and carbon fiber. They come with touchscreens reaching up to 2.8K resolution, while the trackpads use haptic feedback and glass surfaces. Some models also pack as many as six speakers with Dolby Atmos and noise-canceling microphones.

Then there’s the Glowbar.

Google is bringing back its interactive light strip, which can animate during startup, indicate battery levels, and display other patterns. The company is also opening the Glowbar to developers so they can create their own animations. Because apparently even your laptop now needs a little stage presence.

Under the hood, Googlebook is being built around AI-focused hardware. The launch lineup includes Intel Core Ultra Series 3 and Snapdragon X Elite processors, with NPUs capable of more than 45 TOPS of on-device AI performance. Google says the hardware is designed to handle demanding AI workloads without relying on loud cooling fans.

Every model starts with 16GB of RAM, with some configurations reaching 32GB. Google claims up to 14 hours of video playback and up to 16 hours of web browsing, depending on the model and workload.

And Google isn’t stopping at hardware. Every Googlebook includes 12 months of Google AI Pro, along with 5TB of cloud storage and Gemini Advanced tools. Buyers also get three months of YouTube Premium and subscriptions to software including Adobe Photoshop. Google says Googlebook OS will receive regular feature drops and updates for up to 10 years.

Preorders are already open, with retail availability beginning October 4 and international availability following on October 5 in markets including Canada, the U.K., Ireland, France, Germany, and Australia.

But let’s be honest: we’re going to need some time to get used to saying “Googlebook.”

For years, “Chromebook” was the name associated with Google’s laptop platform. Now Google is effectively creating a new premium category with a name that sounds like someone at Google typed “Google + laptop” into a naming spreadsheet and decided not to overthink it.

And that’s what makes this so wonderfully Google.

First we had Google Pixel. Then Pixelbook. Then Chromebook. Now Googlebook.

At this rate, I’m looking forward to Google Mouse, Google Keyboard, Google Monitor, Google Chair and, eventually, Google House.

Somewhere in the distance, a lion is probably roaring.

Google, please continue.
