Google is reportedly set to expand its streaming device lineup with a larger model that could challenge the likes of the Roku Ultra, NVIDIA Shield TV, and Apple TV 4K. A departure from the company’s compact dongle-shaped Chromecast devices, the new “Google TV Streamer” is expected to offer increased processing power and additional features.
Recent leaks suggest two significant enhancements: Ethernet connectivity and a Thread radio. The inclusion of an Ethernet port would provide a more stable and potentially faster connection compared to Wi-Fi, particularly beneficial for streaming high-resolution content or accessing media servers. Additionally, it would alleviate network congestion by reducing the number of Wi-Fi devices.
The integration of a Thread radio could further elevate the device’s capabilities, allowing for seamless interaction with Thread-enabled smart home devices. Users might be able to control various home appliances and systems directly through the Google TV Streamer, streamlining the overall smart home experience.
