Google Play adds Venmo at checkout

If you already use Venmo to split bills and pay friends, you can now use that same account to buy apps, games, movies, and more from the Play Store.

Google just quietly flipped a switch that a lot of Android users have probably been waiting for without even realizing it. Starting today, Venmo is officially a payment option inside the Google Play Store, meaning you can link your Venmo account and use it to buy apps, games, movies, books, subscriptions, and all that other digital stuff you already spend money on through Play.

If you’re the kind of person who’s been juggling a credit card, a Google Pay balance, and Venmo separately for years, this one’s for you. Now everything can funnel through the wallet you probably already use to split dinner bills or pay your roommate for utilities.

Here’s the thing about Venmo – it’s not just some niche payment app anymore. It’s genuinely massive in the US, with well over 90 million active users, and the majority of that user base skews Gen Z and Millennial. A huge chunk of those people – something like 61 percent according to PayPal’s own numbers – aren’t even PayPal users, meaning Venmo has built its own separate, loyal fanbase. That’s a big deal for Google, because it means the Play Store just tapped into a payment method that a specific, younger, mobile-first crowd already trusts and uses constantly.

And trust matters a lot when it comes to how people pay online. Venmo isn’t some random third-party checkout box – it’s the app plenty of people already use daily to pay friends back, split rent, or tip a bartender. Bringing that same familiar, social payment experience into Google Play checkout removes one more bit of friction that might otherwise make someone abandon a purchase.

How to actually set it up

The process is refreshingly simple, at least based on how Google’s describing it. You just head into your payment methods section inside the Google Play Store app, and from there you can link your Venmo account directly. Once it’s connected, you’ve got the choice of paying straight from your Venmo balance or using whatever payment method you’ve already got linked to Venmo itself, like a bank account or debit card.

So whether you’re trying to grab in-game currency to level up faster, renew a subscription you forgot was even running, or toss a few bucks to a creator you follow, Venmo now sits right there as an option at checkout. It’s not a massive technical overhaul from the user’s side – just one more tile to tap when you’re setting up how you pay.
