Google just rewired how it wants to protect your Pixel gear. On August 27, the company unveiled Pixel Care+, a consolidated — and beefed-up — device protection program for Pixel phones, watches, tablets and a handful of Fitbit wearables. The pitch is simple: fewer caveats, sweeter perks, and a clearer path to a replacement device when things go sideways. “Pixel Care+ will provide a higher level of coverage, service, and peace of mind for Google hardware owners,” Google wrote in its announcement.
What Pixel Care+ gives you (the shiny bits)
Google positioned Pixel Care+ as the replacement for Google Preferred Care and Fi Device Protection in the U.S., folding them into one flagship offering. The headline benefits are deliberately consumer-friendly:
- Unlimited accidental-damage claims (drops, cracks, spills).
- $0 repairs for the most common fixes — Google specifically calls out front screens, back glass and batteries that drop below 80% capacity.
- $0 post-warranty malfunction claims — essentially an extended safety net for hardware failures after the warranty expires.
- Priority support from Pixel Experts and self-service claims through the Google Store.
- Fast replacement shipping for repairs/replacements (Google says replacements typically ship next day, subject to availability).
- Optional loss & theft protection for an extra fee.
Those features are a clear upgrade on paper — free screen and battery repairs are a real selling point, especially if you’ve ever been burned by an expensive out-of-warranty replacement.

How much does it cost
Pixel Care+ is sold as monthly plans and two-year prepaid plans, and pricing varies by model. For a quick frame of reference, Google lists Pixel Care+ for the regular Pixel 10 at about $9/month or $179 for two years, while adding loss & theft bumps that to roughly $10/month or $199 for two years. For higher-end phones and foldables, the monthly and two-year prices scale up — the Pixel 10 Pro and Fold models carry higher premiums. Expect the overall price to be a hair higher than some older Preferred Care plans, but also to deliver more generous benefits.
Service fees and deductibles are modest: Google shows $0 deductibles for the most common repairs called out above, while a service fee for non-covered accidental damage (if that applies) sits in the neighborhood of $59, and loss & theft deductibles are also listed separately. Read the plan page carefully for the exact figures for your device.
Which devices are eligible
Pixel Care+ covers a broad swath of Made-by-Google hardware bought from the Google Store and Google Fi. That list includes the Pixel 8/9/10 families (and their fold/Pro variants), Pixel Watch 2/3/4, Pixel Tablet, and a selection of Fitbit models (Sense 2, Versa 4, Charge 6, Inspire 3, Ace LTE). You can enroll within 60 days of purchase, and Google says existing Preferred Care and Fi Device Protection customers in the U.S. will be migrated to Pixel Care+ over the coming months.
The catch
Pixel Care+ is a step up, but not every wart was removed:
- Foldable inner screens: Google’s $0 screen repair promise excludes inner fold displays on Pixel Fold phones. That’s a notable exclusion for people buying foldables.
- Loss & theft availability and local rules: Loss & theft insurance is optional and may not be available in all states (New York often has special insurance rules, for example). Check the plan terms for state-specific limitations.
- Same vendor, new name: Google is again working with Asurion (and for insurance components, a carrier like CNA may underwrite the risk). Some users are wary because third-party administrators handle claims and fulfillment — experiences vary. That’s worth remembering if you’re buying solely for support experience, not just coverage.
Why Google is making this move
There are a few likely reasons Google consolidated protections into Pixel Care+:
- Simplicity: Fewer plan names, clearer benefits and one storefront make the offer easier for customers to understand at purchase time. That matters when a lot of buying still happens in the heat of a product launch.
- Product parity: Google’s hardware lineup has expanded (phones, watches, tablets, Fitbit handoffs), and a single umbrella plan makes it simpler to offer consistent coverage across devices.
- Competitive positioning: With many smartphone makers offering strengthened trade-in and protection programs, Google needs a compelling service play to match the hardware improvements it’s been touting. The free-screen/battery line is meant to be that comp.
What to do if you’re buying a Pixel now
If you’re in the market for a Pixel or Pixel accessory, check these boxes before you opt in:
- Compare the monthly vs two-year price to see which saves you money for the typical lifespan you expect for the device.
- Read exclusions closely (fold screens, state-specific insurance rules).
- If support experience matters, skim user reports (forums and Reddit) about previous Asurion/Preferred Care interactions — outcomes vary and anecdote is not data, but patterns emerge.
The bottom line
Pixel Care+ is Google’s clear attempt to make device protection feel less like a tacked-on insurance product and more like a built-in part of the Pixel experience: faster replacements, lower out-of-pocket costs for routine repair scenarios, and priority support baked in. For many buyers, the $0 screen and battery repairs plus unlimited post-warranty claims will be meaningful peace of mind. But because some exclusions remain and because fulfillment is still handled by a third party, the real test will be everyday execution — how fast and smoothly Google and Asurion handle claims when customers actually need help. If the rollout matches the pitch, Pixel Care+ could tip the balance for buyers who were on the fence. If it doesn’t, users will notice quickly.
