Google has introduced a series of updates for its Pixel lineup, expanding the utility of its AI-powered tools to enhance security and improve the user experience. Among these new features, theft protection takes center stage, with updates like Theft Detection Lock, Offline Device Lock, and Remote Lock being rolled out to Android 10 or newer devices, not just Pixel phones.
The Theft Detection Lock uses AI to detect suspicious movements that could indicate a theft, such as someone grabbing your phone suddenly or fleeing. If the AI senses such actions, it locks the device automatically, preventing thieves from accessing your data. Even if your phone is taken offline by the thief, the Offline Device Lock will trigger, adding another layer of protection by locking the phone as soon as it’s disconnected from the network.
Remote Lock is another handy feature that allows users to lock their stolen device remotely using just their phone number and a quick security challenge. This gives users more control, even when the phone is not in hand, and buys time to recover the device or secure their account details.
Google has also upgraded factory reset protection to require Google account credentials during setup after a reset, reducing the incentive for theft by making stolen devices unsellable.
Additionally, Pixel devices, including older models like the Pixel 6, are receiving updates that include features such as Night Sight for Instagram, allowing for clearer photos in low light directly within the app. For avid photographers, astrophotography via Night Sight is now available as well, giving users the ability to capture stunning images of the night sky.
