There’s a glimmer of hope for Google Pixel 6 users who’ve had their phones bricked by a recent software bug. Google has finally acknowledged the issue and offered some temporary workarounds while they develop a permanent fix.
The problem lies with the factory reset function on Pixel 6, 6a, and 6 Pro devices. When users attempt a factory reset, their phones end up stuck, displaying an error message stating, “Cannot load Android system. Your data may be corrupt.” The message then prompts users to perform another factory reset in a futile attempt to fix the problem.
While a permanent solution is still under development, Google has released some advice to help users avoid getting their phones bricked in the first place. Their recommendation is simple: after a system update, leave your phone powered on and idle for 15 minutes before attempting a factory reset. Alternatively, Google suggests resetting your phone to factory settings before installing the recent update.
Unfortunately, these steps come a little too late for users whose phones are already bricked. Google hasn’t confirmed yet if a warranty claim would cover such damages, although some users on support forums reported that Google Support offered this option as a possibility.
The exact cause of the bug remains unclear. However, Google strongly advises against attempting further factory resets if you encounter the error message. Doing so might lead to even more concerning messages indicating missing critical files on your phone. While waiting for a fix can be frustrating, especially if you were planning to sell your phone, it’s definitely better than permanently damaging the device.
It’s encouraging to see Google actively addressing the issue, especially considering the relatively quick response. However, it’s likely going to be some time before a full fix is available. So, Pixel 6 users who were planning a factory reset should hold off for now and keep an eye out for further updates from Google.
