It’s not every day that an update to a photo management app turns heads, but Google Photos‘ latest tweak for iOS users is doing just that. According to 9to5Google, Google is rolling out a new interface change in version 7.11 of the Google Photos app for iOS, introducing a set of shortcuts right at the top of the Photos tab.
This update adds four circular icons directly beneath the search bar, providing quick access to “Favorites,” “Recently Added,” a “Trash” bin, and the last viewed album. These shortcuts are designed to streamline navigation, making it easier for users to dive into specific sections without scrolling through their entire photo library.
The placement of these shortcuts is particularly noteworthy. Historically, the first thing you’d see upon opening Google Photos was the Memories carousel — a feature that turns your photos into mini-stories or highlights from your past. Now, this carousel has been nudged down the screen to make room for the new shortcuts. While this does push the grid of your photos further down, it’s a trade-off that seems worthwhile for enhanced accessibility.
The new quick access shortcuts
- Favorites: This shortcut’s heart icon anchors tit offering immediate access to photos you’ve marked as favorites. This is especially handy for those who frequently revisit their top picks or need to share beloved images. quickly
- Recently Added: Symbolized by a magnifying glass intertwined with a rewind icon, this option essentially filters your most recent uploads, saving you from the tedious task of scrolling to the bottom of your photo collection.
- Last Viewed Album: This shortcut varies based on user behavior, showing the most recently opened album. It’s a thoughtful touch for those who organize their photos into specific albums, whether for work, travel, or personal events.
- Trash: Perhaps the most debated of the new shortcuts, the trash icon gives quick access to deleted photos. While it’s useful for recovering accidentally deleted images, some might argue that its prominence could be better suited elsewhere, considering how rarely one might need to venture into this area.
This update is currently exclusive to iOS users, leaving Android users in anticipation of when, or if, these changes will migrate to their platform. The move to enhance user interaction with these shortcuts suggests Google’s ongoing commitment to improving the usability of Google Photos, a key player in cloud-based photo storage and management.
For many, this update will mean quicker access to frequently used functions, potentially changing how they interact with their digital memories. However, while this interface change looks to improve efficiency, it also slightly alters the familiar layout of the app, which might take some getting used to.
For those who haven’t yet updated to version 7.11, now might be the time to check for updates in the App Store. And as always with Google products, remember that features can roll out in stages, so if you don’t see the shortcuts yet, they might just be around the corner.
