Google Photos is about to get a significant upgrade thanks to Gemini. At the recent I/O keynote, CEO Sundar Pichai introduced “Ask Photos,” a new feature set to launch this summer. This enhancement promises to elevate the app’s intelligence, making it even more adept at understanding user requests by leveraging advanced artificial intelligence to connect the dots for more nuanced inquiries.
Pichai demonstrated the new feature with a query: “What’s my license plate number again?” Traditionally, finding a license plate would involve sifting through numerous car photos. However, “Ask Photos” showcased its sophistication by pinpointing the specific vehicle. It utilized various data points such as location history, frequency of appearances in photos, and other contextual clues to provide the license plate number directly in a text response, along with a confirming image.
“Ask Photos can also help you search your memories in a deeper way,” Pichai explained. For instance, he asked the app to “show me how Lucia’s swimming has progressed.” In response, Gemini combed through a vast collection of photos, efficiently summarizing years of swimming lessons and highlighting key moments of progress.
Pichai announced that Ask Photos will be integrated into Google Photos this summer, with even more features expected to follow. He emphasized the service’s growing significance, noting that Google Photos now handles 6 billion uploads daily, a mix of photos and videos, since its launch nearly nine years ago. This staggering volume underscores just how integral the platform has become in preserving and organizing digital memories for millions of users.
