Google is expanding the capabilities of its Google Home app with two significant updates: the full rollout of garage door detection and the integration of the Nest Hello doorbell.
Garage door detection
Until now, Google’s garage door detection feature has been exclusive to a select group of users participating in the public preview program. But the tech giant has decided to open the gates to everyone with a Nest Aware subscription in the US and Canada. This means millions of homeowners can now rest easier knowing their garage door is securely closed.
The magic behind this feature lies in your existing Nest Cam. Without the need for additional hardware, the camera’s AI capabilities can detect when your garage door opens, closes, or, crucially, is left open. This information is then relayed to you via notifications, providing an extra layer of security and peace of mind.
While it’s a fantastic addition, it’s essential to note that the system is observational rather than operational. It can tell you the status of your garage door but can’t control it.
Nest Hello comes home to Google Home
Google has been gradually migrating its Nest devices to the Google Home app, and the Nest Hello doorbell is the latest to join the fold. This move is a significant step forward for users who have been juggling multiple apps to manage their smart home ecosystem.
With the integration, users can now view live video feeds, access recorded footage, and set up automation directly within the Google Home app. This unified experience streamlines the management of smart home devices, making it more convenient for users.
While this is undoubtedly positive news, it’s worth noting that the transition is still ongoing. Several other Nest devices, including the Nest Cam IQ models and the Nest Protect smoke alarm, are yet to make the full leap to the Google Home app.
