Google is giving Gemini a new way to handle the tasks you keep asking it to do over and over again. The company is rolling out “Skills,” reusable custom instructions that can automate recurring workflows without making you paste the same giant prompt into every new chat.

Announced September 30, Skills are rolling out globally in Gemini chat for personal accounts, with support coming to Google Workspace business, enterprise, nonprofit, and education customers in the coming weeks. Google is also using Skills to replace Gems, with existing Gems set to automatically migrate to the new system.

The basic idea is pretty simple. Instead of telling Gemini how you want something done every single time, you can create a Skill once and reuse those instructions whenever you need them.

Once a Skill is created, you can invoke it by typing a forward slash followed by its name in the prompt box. Google says Gemini can also recognize when a Skill is relevant to a prompt and automatically apply it, which makes the feature considerably more convenient than manually digging through a list of custom assistants.

For example, you could create a Skill that prepares presentation outlines and talking points, another that consistently applies your preferred writing style, or one that always gives you several different perspectives when brainstorming an idea. Google says Skills can also be built from conversations, allowing Gemini to turn recurring workflows into reusable instructions.

Your browser does not support the video tag.

And this is where things get more interesting. Skills can be stacked together, so Gemini can combine multiple sets of instructions for a larger task. Google gives the example of combining a writing-style Skill with brand guidelines to produce content that follows both sets of requirements.

Skills can also include reference files. As of the rollout, users can add files such as text documents, PDFs, and images, giving Gemini additional material to work from when carrying out the task. Google says support for Google Drive files and Gemini Notebook content is also coming as the transition from Gems continues.

In other words, Skills are starting to make Gemini feel less like a chatbot that you repeatedly instruct and more like a collection of reusable workflows.

Gems are going away

The arrival of Skills also marks the end of the road for Gems, Google’s existing system for creating customized versions of Gemini.

Google says Skills will eventually take over the functionality of Gems, with support for Gems being removed on different schedules depending on the account type. Personal Google accounts will lose Gems in November 2026, followed by Workspace business, enterprise, and nonprofit accounts in March 2027. Education accounts will follow in June 2027.

The good news is that Google isn’t asking users to rebuild everything from scratch. When Gems are removed, Google says existing Gems will automatically be recreated as Skills, including supported knowledge files.

Users who want to make the switch earlier can manually recreate a Gem as a Skill. Google’s instructions involve copying the Gem’s name, description, and instructions into a new Skill, with additional steps for transferring knowledge files.

There are still some differences during the transition. Google says Skills currently don’t support every tool that was available with Gems. Features including video creation, music creation, Canvas, Deep Research, and Guided Learning aren’t currently supported by Skills.

Google also says Skills can be created in unlimited numbers, although only 100 can be active at the same time. Skills created on other platforms can also be imported using a SKILL.md file, although file-based Skill creation is currently available through the Gemini web app and Gemini app on Mac.

The transition should ultimately make custom Gemini workflows much easier to use. Rather than treating a customized assistant as something you have to open separately, Skills are designed to live alongside your normal Gemini conversations and become part of the way you work.

For anyone who uses Gemini for repetitive writing, brainstorming, presentations, document work, or other structured tasks, that’s a pretty meaningful change. And if you’ve built up a collection of Gems, there’s at least one less thing to worry about: Google plans to handle the migration for you.
