Google is bringing Gemini to the Windows desktop with a dedicated app that puts its AI assistant just a keyboard shortcut away.

The new Gemini app for Windows is available globally starting September 10 for PCs running Windows 10 or Windows 11. Rather than relying on a browser window, users can install the app and summon Gemini directly over whatever they are working on.

Gemini is just a shortcut away

One of the main features of the Windows app is its quick-access shortcut. Pressing Alt + Space brings up Gemini over the active application, allowing users to ask a question, check information, draft text or get help with something on screen before returning to their work.

The shortcut can be customized in the app’s settings, and Gemini can also be launched from the Windows taskbar or its system-tray icon.

Google says the app is designed for situations where users need quick AI assistance without interrupting their workflow. That could mean checking a document, brainstorming presentation titles or getting help with a project without switching to a separate browser tab.

A dedicated workspace for bigger tasks

The Windows app isn’t limited to the small pop-up experience. Users can open the full Gemini workspace for more involved tasks, including multi-step research, planning and synthesis through Gemini Spark.

Gemini can also work with information from Google’s ecosystem. Google says users can pull information from services such as Gmail and Google Drive into their desktop workflow, making it possible to find details in email threads, summarize documents or combine information from different sources.

The desktop version also supports Gemini’s creative tools. Users can generate images with Nano Banana and create videos with Gemini Omni from within the app. Availability for some of these features can depend on the user’s Google AI subscription.

More Windows features are coming

Google describes the current Windows app as the beginning of its desktop push. The company says additional native desktop capabilities will roll out over time.

The current desktop site highlights capabilities such as screen-context sharing, voice dictation and local-file workflows, but some of those features are currently specific to the macOS version. Google says more native capabilities are coming to Windows.

The Windows app runs on both x64 and ARM64 PCs and requires Windows 10 or later. Google says it is designed to be lightweight and run in the background without slowing down the computer.

Users can download the new Gemini app directly from Google’s desktop page.
