Google DeepMind is taking AI-generated worlds a step closer to interactive reality. Its latest world model, Genie 4, can generate photorealistic environments, simulate physical interactions, and produce synchronized audio, including ambient sounds, music, and conversations between virtual characters.

Announced on October 27, 2026, Genie 4 represents Google’s latest effort to advance interactive world simulation. Unlike conventional AI video generators that primarily create clips from prompts, Genie 4 is designed to build environments that users can explore, modify, and interact with in real time.

The model combines capabilities from Google‘s Gemini family to make these simulated environments more realistic and coherent. Gemini Omni helps ground the simulations in real-world appearances and behavior, while other Gemini models provide the reasoning needed to maintain continuity as events unfold.

Create and change AI-generated worlds in real time

One of Genie 4’s biggest improvements is its ability to respond to natural-language instructions while a simulation is running.

Users can navigate environments using standard keyboard controls and adjust scenes through text prompts. For example, they can change weather conditions, reposition the camera, introduce new characters, or add objects without restarting the entire simulation.

Gemini also works behind the scenes to interpret these instructions in context and help the environment evolve naturally. Rather than simply generating a sequence of disconnected scenes, the system attempts to maintain a continuous world that responds to user interactions.

Google DeepMind has demonstrated this capability through several environments, including expansive landscapes, floating platforms, wildlife scenes, and immersive visual experiences.

More realistic physics and human movement

Genie 4 also brings improvements to how objects and people behave inside simulated environments.

The model can represent physical scenarios involving aerodynamics, collisions, and other real-world interactions. Google says it has made significant progress in generating human characters that move more naturally, respond to their surroundings, and can be controlled interactively.

These improvements are particularly important for applications where a simulation needs to behave like a real environment rather than simply look convincing.

For example, a character can react to changes in its surroundings, while objects and environmental elements respond to physical events. Users can also influence how these interactions develop through real-time instructions.

Genie 4 generates audio alongside visuals

Perhaps the most interesting addition is native audio generation.

Genie 4 is Google’s first real-time world model capable of generating audio natively. This means environmental sounds are produced alongside the simulated visuals rather than being added separately during post-production.

A beach environment can include crashing waves, while a forest can feature wind moving through trees. The model can also generate music and other sounds that match the environment.

More importantly, Genie 4 introduces interactive dialogue. Virtual characters can speak, respond to user instructions, and react to events happening around them. Their conversations adapt as the simulation progresses.

This combination of real-time visuals, environmental audio, and interactive speech could make AI-generated environments considerably more immersive.

Gemini adds reasoning to complex simulations

Google is also combining Genie 4 with its Gemini models to simulate more complicated, multi-step events.

In one of its demonstrations, Gemini 3.8 Flash acts as a guiding agent. It continuously observes the generated environment, breaks down instructions into smaller steps, and checks incoming frames to determine whether each action has been completed successfully.

The system can adjust its plans when the environment changes or users introduce new instructions.

Google has also experimented with Gemini 4 Argon and Genie 4 alongside its Gemini Robotics research. One demonstration features Apptronik’s Apollo humanoid robot playing a game of checkers in a simulated environment, with Gemini breaking the task into steps for Genie 4 to render.

This approach could eventually help researchers test how AI agents and robots respond to different situations before deploying them in physical environments.

Potential applications beyond gaming

Although interactive gaming experiences are an obvious use case, Google DeepMind sees Genie 4 as a tool with applications across several industries.

Filmmakers and creative teams could use it to explore scenes, experiment with camera angles, adjust lighting, and test dialogue without building every environment from scratch.

Journalists and researchers are exploring how historical photographs could become explorable simulations, potentially providing new ways to visualize historical locations and events.

Game developers could also use the technology to turn early concepts into interactive prototypes, testing environments, visual styles, and gameplay mechanics before writing traditional game-engine code.

Meanwhile, robotics researchers and enterprise partners could use simulated environments to generate scenarios for training and evaluating AI systems.

Genie 4 is still an experimental research preview

Despite its impressive capabilities, Genie 4 is not ready for unrestricted public use.

Google DeepMind has started providing access to a limited group of trusted testers to gather feedback before expanding availability. The company plans to bring the model to Google AI Ultra subscribers through Project Genie, along with early-access partners using the Gemini API and Google AI Studio.

Google also acknowledges several limitations. While Genie 4 can maintain coherent environments during shorter sessions, visual details and object permanence can drift over time. Complex physical interactions, audio accuracy, readable text, spatial accuracy, and long-term consistency remain areas of active research.

The company is also taking steps to identify AI-generated content. Videos and audio produced by Genie 4 will include SynthID, Google’s imperceptible watermarking technology for identifying AI-generated media.

For now, Genie 4 offers an early look at a different direction for generative AI. Instead of simply asking AI to create an image or video, users could eventually describe an entire environment, step inside it, and influence what happens next.

That shift from generating content to simulating interactive worlds could have significant implications for gaming, filmmaking, robotics, and the broader creative industry.
