Google just added a hands-on vibe coding course to its wildly popular AI Professional Certificate, betting that the future of “coding” belongs to anyone who can describe what they want in plain English.
Since launching in February 2026, the Google AI Professional Certificate has quietly become the most popular generative AI certificate ever on Coursera, pulling in over a million enrollments and a 4.8 out of 5 rating from thousands of reviewers. That’s not a small feat in a crowded field of AI courses. Companies like Deloitte, Verizon, Lyft, and Walmart have already started using it to train entire teams, which tells you this isn’t just a hobbyist’s side project – it’s becoming a real workforce credential.
But here’s the thing that pushed Google to expand it: learners kept asking for deeper lessons on vibe coding, and the data backs up why. Search interest for “vibe coding” in the US has jumped 140 percent compared to last year, according to Google Trends data cited in the announcement. That’s a massive spike for a term that barely existed before 2025.
What exactly is vibe coding, anyway
If you haven’t heard the term before, vibe coding is basically what happens when you skip the syntax and just tell an AI what you want in everyday language, then let it handle the actual code. Andrej Karpathy, the former Tesla AI director and OpenAI co-founder, coined the phrase back in early 2025, describing it as a mindset where you “fully give in to the vibes, embrace exponentials, and forget that the code even exists”. It caught on so fast that Collins Dictionary named it Word of the Year in 2025 after search interest spiked by an eye-watering 6,700 percent.
The workflow itself is pretty simple once you break it down: you describe your intent, the AI generates the code, you test it, and then you refine things until it actually works the way you imagined. What makes this different from traditional programming is that you’re judging outcomes rather than micromanaging every line of code. This has opened the door for people who have zero background in software development. Industry estimates suggest that around 63 percent of active vibe coding users today are non-developers – product managers, designers, founders, and everyday professionals who just need something built and don’t have years of computer science training to fall back on.
Inside Google’s new course
The new vibe coding course launched the same day as the announcement, and Google’s pitch is refreshingly direct: no coding experience required. The curriculum walks learners through planning an app, testing and debugging it, and then actually deploying it, so the end goal isn’t just understanding a concept – it’s walking away with something you built yourself.
Google shared a few real-world examples to make the case. One that stands out is Leo Garcia, a former Walmart truck driver who’s now a Logistics Load Manager in Bentonville, Arkansas. Using skills from the certificate, Leo built four custom apps to optimize operations across multiple states, including one called “Get My Driver Home” that shrank daily reporting meetings down to 15-minute huddles. Walmart is reportedly still reviewing similar employee-built apps, which says a lot about how seriously companies are taking this shift toward giving frontline workers actual building tools instead of just dashboards to look at.
Verizon is another company leaning in hard. Donna Epps, the company’s Chief Responsible Business Officer, said the certificate has become central to building AI fluency across their workforce, from small business customers to current and former employees going through career transition programs. Employees there have moved from simple tasks like drafting emails to building more sophisticated tools, like virtual quoting assistants inside Gemini Notebook.
The bigger picture
Zoom out a bit and this move fits a much larger trend reshaping how software gets built. Some estimates now put the vibe coding market at around $4.7 billion in 2026, with projections it could nearly triple to $12.3 billion by 2027. Gartner has even predicted that 60 percent of all new code could be AI-generated by the end of this year. Whether that number holds up or not, the direction is clear.
There’s also a shift happening in language, with some in the industry starting to talk about “agentic engineering” as the next evolution beyond vibe coding, where AI agents don’t just write code from a prompt but actually operate with more autonomy across an entire project, testing, deploying, and iterating with less hand-holding. Karpathy himself has apparently already called vibe coding “passe” in favor of this more advanced framing. That said, most experts still agree vibe coding works best for prototypes and simpler projects, while things like complex debugging and large-scale refactoring still benefit from a developer who actually understands what’s happening under the hood.
For now, though, Google’s bet seems pretty straightforward: as AI keeps eating into the technical barrier that used to separate “people who code” from “people who don’t,” the company wants its certificate to be the on-ramp millions of people use to get there.
