At CES 2025, Delta Air Lines made headlines with its announcement to elevate the in-flight entertainment experience by installing new 4K HDR QLED screens on its commercial aircraft. This move promises to transform the often lackluster seat-back screens into high-definition entertainment centers at 30,000 feet.

The announcement took place during Delta’s keynote at the Sphere in Las Vegas, a venue renowned for its immersive technology, where Delta not only celebrated its centennial but also introduced a suite of innovations aimed at enhancing passenger comfort and connectivity. The highlight was undoubtedly the promise of ultra-high-definition viewing, but the event also featured partnerships with YouTube for ad-free streaming, Uber for seamless ground transportation, and the introduction of an AI-powered chatbot in the Delta app, aptly named “Delta Concierge.”

For years, in-flight entertainment has been a point of contention for many travelers, often criticized for poor resolution and outdated content. Delta’s new screens, developed in collaboration with Thales Avionics, aim to change this narrative. Thales Avionics, known for equipping Emirates’ Airbus A350-900s with similar technology, brings expertise to Delta’s ambitious project. However, passengers will need to wait until 2026 to enjoy these upgrades as Delta plans to install them in new aircraft deliveries, including Airbus A350-1000, 737MAX-10, and A321neos, according to Delta spokesperson Grant Myatt.

Moreover, Delta is not gatekeeping this technology for premium passengers alone; the 4K HDR screens will be accessible across all cabin classes, democratizing high-quality entertainment. This approach aligns with Delta’s broader strategy to enhance the travel experience for every passenger, regardless of their seat class.

In addition to visual upgrades, Delta has been quietly experimenting with Bluetooth connectivity for personal devices, a feature now set to become standard across all cabins starting in 2026. This move was first spotted by eagle-eyed passengers on social media, showcasing Delta’s responsiveness to consumer feedback even before official announcements.

The airline is also stepping into the realm of personalized entertainment with an “advanced recommendation engine.” While specifics are sparse, this AI-driven system promises to tailor content to individual tastes, potentially reducing the time spent scrolling through options. This leap into personalization is bolstered by Delta’s partnership with Hughes for enhanced Wi-Fi connectivity, ensuring that streaming and browsing are smoother and more reliable.

For SkyMiles members, the partnership with YouTube means ad-free content during flights, further enhancing the entertainment options. A new “Do Not Disturb” feature will also allow passengers to enjoy their journey without interruptions, whether they’re watching a movie or catching some sleep.

On the technological front, Delta’s mobile app is set for an overhaul. The AI “Concierge” will provide real-time travel assistance, from suggesting efficient travel routes to reminding passengers about visa and passport renewals. Over time, this feature aims to offer personalized packing suggestions based on destination weather forecasts and travel duration, illustrating Delta’s commitment to a more holistic travel experience.

Further expanding its digital ecosystem, Delta is integrating Uber into its loyalty program, allowing SkyMiles members to earn miles on rides to and from airports, with multipliers for premium and reserved services, plus points on Uber Eats orders. This integration not only encourages the use of Delta’s partners but also adds value to the SkyMiles program.

Environmentally, Delta isn’t resting on its laurels. In collaboration with Airbus, Delta is exploring sustainable aviation fuels and hydrogen technology, aiming for 95% of its fuel consumption to be sustainable by 2050. This involves not only adopting biofuels but also innovating in aircraft design for better fuel efficiency and exploring new flight formations for “wake energy retrieval.”
