Apple‘s latest iPad Pro boasts a stunning display with vibrant colors, but what if you crave a different experience? Enter Daylight, a new company taking a unique approach to tablets with their first device, the DC-1.
For those who prioritize eye health and a distraction-free reading experience, e-readers like Kindle have long been a popular choice. However, their slow refresh rates can make scrolling clunky. The DC-1 aims to bridge this gap with its innovative LivePaper display.
Imagine an e-reader display that looks like E Ink but refreshes as smoothly as a regular tablet. That’s the promise of LivePaper. It delivers a glare-free, paper-like experience that’s easy on the eyes, with a 60Hz refresh rate for comfortable reading and navigation. An amber-colored backlight, free of harmful blue light and flicker, further enhances reading comfort during long sessions.
The display even has a textured matte finish, mimicking the feel of turning a page in a physical book. While the 190ppi resolution might seem lower than typical tablets, the matte finish effectively hides any pixelation, making it ideal for reading text-heavy content.
Powering the DC-1 is Sol:OS, a custom Android 13 operating system designed to minimize distractions. It prioritizes reading and note-taking apps, but allows installation of most regular Android apps as well.
The DC-1 is equipped with a MediaTek Helio G99 processor, 8GB of RAM, and 128GB of storage, expandable via a microSD slot. An 8000mAh battery promises long battery life, lasting for “days on a single charge” according to Daylight. The 550g (1.2 lbs)tablet also features customizable buttons for easy page turning and other functions.
The DC-1 is currently available for preorder on Daylight’s website for $729. It comes bundled with a Wacom stylus and a fabric case for a limited time.
Daylight envisions a future filled with “healthier, more humane computers.” The DC-1, with its focus on a comfortable reading experience and distraction-free design, seems like a step in that direction. With positive reception for similar devices, the DC-1 has the potential to be a success, potentially paving the way for a wave of LivePaper-equipped devices, including minimalist phones.
