ChatGPT, developed by OpenAI, has emerged as a leading AI chatbot, transforming natural language processing and interaction. Its ability to engage users in insightful conversations and provide valuable information has made it increasingly popular. However, one crucial limitation of ChatGPT is its lack of true understanding, as it operates solely on learned patterns from vast internet data.

Over the years, users have found themselves turning to ChatGPT to discuss personal and mental health issues. Researchers have been investigating the potential of language processing chatbots, like ChatGPT, in the mental health sector. Early studies have yielded promising results, with chatbots even being tested as providers of cognitive behavioral therapy.

Emotional awareness plays a pivotal role in providing effective mental health assistance. This cognitive capacity entails recognizing, comprehending, and acknowledging both one’s own emotions and the emotions conveyed by others. Empathy and attunement to verbal and nonverbal cues enable understanding and addressing emotional states effectively.

To evaluate ChatGPT’s emotional awareness capabilities, Zohar Elyoseph and his colleagues employed the Levels of Emotional Awareness Scale (LEAS). This scale comprises 20 emotionally charged open-ended questions, aimed at eliciting responses corresponding to emotions such as anger, fear, happiness, and sadness.

Participants were asked to imagine themselves in these scenarios and express their emotions in the original version. In the study, ChatGPT was tasked with describing how a “human” would feel in each situation. The responses were then compared to those of 750 French participants from a separate study, ranging in age from 17 to 84 years.

The findings of the study were striking. ChatGPT’s emotional awareness scores surpassed those of both women and men in the first evaluation, indicating its superiority in this aspect compared to the general population. Although a few real individuals outperformed ChatGPT on this occasion, the AI’s performance demonstrated substantial potential.

However, the story did not end there. In the second evaluation, ChatGPT’s performance witnessed remarkable improvement, with scores outperforming all but a select few individuals from the general population. Further validation by licensed psychologists revealed the accuracy of ChatGPT’s emotional awareness responses.

The study’s implications for AI’s role in mental health support are profound. By showcasing ChatGPT’s competence in emotional awareness tasks, the research opens the door to innovative applications of AI in the field of mental health. However, it is essential to recognize that the study focused on textual scenarios and fictional contexts, limiting the complexity of real-world emotions and interactions.

While AI models excel in tasks where relevant information is clear and predefined, challenges arise in more intricate tasks with mixed emotions and ambiguous contexts. As AI technology evolves, future research will need to explore AI’s efficacy in handling emotionally complex and real-life scenarios.
