ChatGPT is getting a more hands-on relationship with Adobe’s creative tools. Adobe has introduced interactive editing controls for its Adobe plugin in ChatGPT, allowing users to edit images, designs, and PDFs without leaving the ChatGPT interface.
The update, announced on September 29 alongside OpenAI’s DevDay 2026 announcements, combines conversational AI with traditional editing controls. Instead of repeatedly prompting ChatGPT to make increasingly specific changes, users can open an interactive editor, select what they want to change, make adjustments themselves, and continue working through the conversation.
Adobe says the new interactive experiences are rolling out globally on ChatGPT’s web and app experiences.
Adobe brings hands-on editing to ChatGPT
The new image and design editors are powered by Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Express. They combine natural-language instructions with more familiar editing controls, giving users a way to fine-tune AI-assisted changes themselves.
For example, a user could ask Adobe in ChatGPT to remove an unwanted object from a photo. After the initial edit, the user can open the interactive editor, select another part of the image, and make additional adjustments.
The available controls can adapt to the selected content and the type of edit being performed. Adobe says users can access controls such as hue and saturation when working with color, along with adjustments such as brightness and contrast when appropriate.
That creates a hybrid workflow: ChatGPT handles the broad instructions, while the user can take over when a more precise adjustment is easier to make manually.
The changes also remain connected to the ChatGPT conversation. Adobe says edits made through the interactive editor are carried back into the conversation as context, reducing the need to repeatedly upload assets or explain the same edit.
ChatGPT can edit PDFs with Acrobat
Adobe is bringing the same interactive approach to PDF documents through Acrobat.
Users can open a PDF in the side panel and work with the document directly rather than treating it only as an attachment for ChatGPT to analyze. Text can be selected and revised, while highlighted sections can provide context for questions and other actions.
Adobe gives the example of reviewing a freelance contract. A user could highlight a section about payment terms and ask ChatGPT to find other parts of the document that discuss payments or invoicing. Acrobat can then highlight the relevant passages in the PDF.
That makes the PDF an interactive workspace rather than simply a source of information for the chatbot.
It also creates a more useful workflow for documents that require both analysis and editing. You can ask ChatGPT to help understand the document, select the relevant content, and then make changes through Adobe’s editing tools.
Adobe is replacing its standalone Photoshop plugin
The new capabilities are part of a broader Adobe integration for ChatGPT rather than a standalone Photoshop experience.
Adobe says its unified ChatGPT plugin brings capabilities from Photoshop, Lightroom, Firefly, Acrobat, Premiere, Adobe Express, InDesign, and Illustrator into a single Adobe experience. The company says the integration provides more than 70 pro-grade tools across its creative and productivity products.
The available tools go beyond image editing. Depending on the Adobe product and workflow, users can retouch and edit photos, remove backgrounds and distractions, generate content, resize designs, create content with Adobe Express, work with PDFs, edit videos, and create other types of documents.
The integration can also work with supported Creative Cloud assets for users who connect their Adobe account. Adobe says users can search their Creative Cloud content using descriptions such as subject, style, mood, or content instead of manually browsing through files.
Adobe has also replaced its previous standalone Photoshop plugin with the broader Adobe plugin, bringing Photoshop capabilities together with tools from other Adobe applications.
How to use Adobe tools in ChatGPT
Getting started is relatively straightforward.
Users can connect the Adobe plugin in ChatGPT and then invoke it by typing @Adobe in a conversation. From there, they can describe what they want to create or edit and provide an image, video, or document when necessary.
Adobe says users can start as a guest, while signing in with an Adobe account unlocks additional capabilities such as Creative Cloud storage and the ability to save supported work and continue editing it across sessions.
Some capabilities and generative AI features require an eligible paid Adobe plan, so the integration does not make every Adobe feature available for free.
The Adobe integration is available through Adobe for ChatGPT.
Why the hands-on controls matter
The interesting part of Adobe’s update isn’t simply that ChatGPT can edit an image or work with a PDF. AI assistants have already become capable of increasingly sophisticated creative tasks.
The more significant change is the combination of prompting and direct editing.
Natural-language instructions work well for broad changes. But creative work often comes down to small decisions that are difficult to describe precisely. An object might need to be slightly brighter, a color might need to be less saturated, or a specific section of a PDF might need to be changed without touching the surrounding content.
Adobe’s new approach lets ChatGPT handle the parts that benefit from conversational instructions while giving the user direct control over the details.
That makes the workflow less about endlessly prompting an AI until it produces the desired result and more about combining an AI assistant with familiar creative software.
For people who already move between ChatGPT, Photoshop, Acrobat, and other Adobe applications, that could be the most useful part of the update.
