Canva, the design platform we all know and love, just made a big move! They’re buying Leonardo.ai, an Australian startup that’s all about using fancy AI stuff to create awesome content. This basically means Canva is about to get a whole lot more powerful, letting you do even cooler things with your designs.

We don’t know exactly how much money changed hands, but the important part is that Canva now gets access to Leonardo.ai‘s toolbox of text-to-image and text-to-video generators. Imagine typing in “tropical beach sunset” and getting a sweet picture (or even a video!) to pop into your next project – that’s the kind of magic we’re talking about.

Canva says Leonardo.ai will still keep its own website going, kind of like what happened with the Affinity design software they bought earlier this year. But they’re also planning to smash Leonardo.ai’s tech together with their existing “Magic Studio” stuff, which already has a cool image and video generator called “Magic Media.” Basically, they’re merging the best of both worlds to make a design superpower.

Canva’s been branching out lately, adding more features that make it feel like a one-stop shop for all your creative needs. Think of it like your digital toolbox getting a whole lot bigger. This move also puts them in even more competition with Adobe, the big name in design software. Remember how Affinity challenged Adobe’s Illustrator, Photoshop, and InDesign? Leonardo.ai might just do the same for their “Firefly” AI features.

The thing with these AI tools is that they gotta be trained on a bunch of data to work their magic. Leonardo.ai says they use a mix of stuff – licensed content, made-up stuff, and publicly available info. This is a bit different from how Adobe does things, and some folks were pretty unhappy with a recent policy change Adobe made about using user data for their AI.

Canva has a chance to be the good guy here, the company that creators can trust with their designs and data. But they gotta be careful not to pull an Adobe and scare everyone off.

All in all, this is a big deal for Canva and for anyone who loves using it to unleash their creativity. With the power of AI on their side, they’re making it easier than ever to bring your design ideas to life.
