While Apple‘s iPads tend to dominate the tablet conversation (and for good reason), dropping a grand on an iPad Pro or even $350 on a basic model might not be ideal for everyone. Looking for a budget-friendly entertainment device for catching up on shows, reading ebooks, or listening to audiobooks? Look no further than Amazon’s Fire HD 10 tablet, especially with the early Prime Day discount offering a whopping 50% off for Prime members, bringing the price down to a record-low $74.99 ($65 off).

Now, the 2023 Fire HD 10 won’t exactly knock your socks off with features like an OLED display or top-of-the-line specs. But compared to some of Amazon’s more basic models, it’s a clear step up. This affordable tablet packs a decent octa-core processor, enough space for your needs with support for up to 1TB of expandable storage via microSD card, and 3GB of RAM – enough to handle multiple browser tabs and some light multitasking if needed. The 10.1-inch 1920 x 1200 display offers surprising sharpness for the price (just avoid direct sunlight for optimal viewing), and you’ll also find a USB-C port for charging and a trusty 3.5mm headphone jack.

There’s a catch, though, like most Fire tablets. For one, you’ll need to shell out an extra $15 to banish those pesky lock screen ads. More importantly, the Fire HD 10 operates within Amazon’s own Appstore, which pales in comparison to the vast libraries offered by the Google Play Store and Apple’s App Store. However, if your tablet needs are limited to streaming Prime Video content or diving into ebooks, you’d be hard-pressed to find a better tablet for the price.
