Australia is poised to implement a world-first initiative aimed at protecting young people from the dangers of social media. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has announced that the government will soon introduce legislation to raise the minimum age for social media access, possibly to 16. This move comes amid growing concerns over the negative impact social media platforms like Instagram, TikTok, and Facebook have on youth mental health and well-being.

The government’s plan is to make it the responsibility of social media companies to enforce the age limit, with no exceptions for parental consent. This means platforms will need to ensure they are taking reasonable steps to prevent access by underage users. Communications Minister Michelle Rowland emphasized that the safety of young people is a top priority, and social media companies, particularly large platforms like Meta (Instagram and Facebook), TikTok, and Elon Musk’s X (formerly Twitter), will be held accountable.

The proposed legislation follows a growing body of research showing that excessive social media use among children and teens can lead to mental health issues, such as anxiety and depression. Recent studies have shown that the regular use of these platforms is negatively affecting life satisfaction among high school students, with some groups, like non-binary students, reporting even worse outcomes.

Although this initiative is garnering support across the political spectrum, some experts have raised concerns about its potential consequences. Critics argue that simply blocking social media access for under-16s could push them toward less regulated and potentially more harmful online spaces. Additionally, questions remain about whether the technology needed to enforce age restrictions will be reliable enough to ensure the policy’s effectiveness.

The government is moving forward with a trial of age-verification technologies in the coming months, with legislation expected to be introduced before the end of the year. This ambitious plan is positioned as a major step toward safeguarding the mental health of young Australians and reducing the harmful effects of online platforms.
