YouTube is bringing its AI-powered conversational search feature, Ask YouTube, to mobile devices, giving viewers a new way to find videos by asking detailed questions instead of relying on traditional keyword searches. Announced on October 12, 2026, the expansion makes the feature available to viewers in the United States across mobile devices, the web, and TVs.

The feature is designed for questions that need more than a list of matching videos. Rather than making users work through multiple searches, Ask YouTube lets them describe what they want in natural language, explore an interactive response, and ask follow-up questions to narrow down the results.

YouTube first introduced the conversational search experience at Google I/O 2026. After expanding it to desktop and television platforms, the company is now bringing the same approach to mobile, where viewers can use it while searching for information, learning about a subject, or deciding what to watch next.

How Ask YouTube works on mobile

Ask YouTube is intended to complement the platform’s existing search rather than replace it. Instead of entering a few keywords and scrolling through results, users can ask a more specific question that describes the information, recommendations, or type of video they want.

For example, someone looking for Halloween costume ideas could ask for do-it-yourself suggestions. Another viewer might want help exploring video essays on a particular subject or recommendations that match a specific interest. YouTube says users have already been using the feature for these kinds of requests, including questions about making Halloween costumes and finding video essays.

The conversational format also allows users to refine their original request. If the first response does not quite match what they have in mind, they can ask a follow-up question rather than starting over with an entirely new search.

Responses can combine written explanations with relevant YouTube videos, Shorts, and video clips. Where available, the results can include the title and channel information, helping viewers identify useful content and jump into relevant portions of a video. The experience can also draw on real-time information from the web alongside YouTube content.

That combination is important because YouTube’s catalog contains everything from short tutorials to hours-long interviews and documentaries. A conversational search interface gives viewers another way to identify the content that actually answers their question without having to watch several videos from beginning to end.

Ask YouTube expands beyond the search results page

The mobile expansion is part of a broader effort to make YouTube’s search experience more interactive. The company has already brought conversational AI search to TVs, allowing viewers to ask questions using their remote’s microphone or an on-screen keyboard.

YouTube is also preparing to expand Ask YouTube directly onto video watch pages. The company says viewers will soon be able to use the feature while watching Shorts and live streams, giving them a way to seek additional context without leaving the content they’re watching.

That could be particularly useful for live events, where viewers might want a quick explanation of something happening on screen, or for Shorts, where a short clip may leave out important background information.

There’s a broader change for creators, too. If viewers increasingly use conversational questions to find specific answers, a video’s usefulness and the relevance of its content may become even more important to discovery. YouTube’s search system already considers factors such as relevance, engagement, and quality when selecting clips for Ask YouTube responses.

Availability remains limited to the United States

Despite the mobile expansion, Ask YouTube is not yet available everywhere. YouTube’s current support documentation lists availability for users in the United States searching in English across computers, mobile devices, and TVs, with access gradually expanding. The feature is also unavailable to supervised child accounts and within the YouTube Kids app.

To try it on a supported mobile device, open the YouTube app, tap the Search icon, select Ask, and enter a question in natural language. After reviewing the response, users can select a suggested follow-up or type another question to refine the results.

As with other generative AI tools, the answers are not guaranteed to be accurate. YouTube advises users to double-check important information rather than relying on generated responses for medical, legal, financial, or other professional advice.

For YouTube, the real opportunity is to make finding the right video less dependent on knowing the exact words to search for. Instead of simply matching keywords, Ask YouTube lets viewers explain what they’re looking for and continue the conversation until they find something useful. Bringing that experience to mobile puts it within reach of viewers wherever they happen to be watching.
