Imagine holding an iPhone where the screen seamlessly wraps around the edges, with no bezels in sight. It sounds like a futuristic dream, right? Well, that dream might remain just out of reach for a little longer. Despite years of progressively reducing the size of bezels on its devices, Apple‘s vision of a completely bezel-less iPhone seems to be hitting some serious snags.
According to Korean news outlet The Elec, Apple has been in deep collaboration with Samsung Display and LG Display, aiming to introduce a “zero-bezel” iPhone as early as 2025 or 2026. However, the latest whispers from the tech grapevine suggest that this timeline is now in jeopardy. The technology to achieve what Apple has envisioned just isn’t ready for prime time yet.
Apple’s ideal design for this zero-bezel iPhone is not just about eliminating borders but doing so in a way that maintains a flat screen while incorporating a subtle curve at the edges, somewhat akin to the design ethos seen on the Apple Watch. This concept, often referred to as a quad micro curve, has been a trendsetter among some Chinese smartphone manufacturers who’ve been experimenting with similar aesthetics. However, Apple’s approach seems to be more nuanced, aiming to avoid the visual distortions often associated with curved screens.

The challenges are manifold. Firstly, there’s the issue of thin-film encapsulation (TFE), which is crucial for protecting the OLED screen from environmental damage like moisture and oxygen. Then there’s the integration of the under-panel camera (UPC) technology, which would allow for the front-facing camera to be hidden beneath the display. Both Samsung and LG are struggling to adapt these technologies to meet Apple’s stringent standards without compromising the display’s integrity or functionality.
Another significant hurdle is the optical clarity and structural integrity of the screen. Apple wants to ensure that the screen’s edge does not suffer from the “magnifying glass effect” or increased fragility, problems that have plagued other phones with curved displays in the past. The current Optical Clear Adhesive (OCA) used for bonding the screen’s layers around the edges hasn’t been up to par, leading to side-view distortions and concerns about the phone’s durability if dropped.
From a manufacturing standpoint, the discussions with display suppliers like Samsung and LG should have been finalized by now for a 2026 launch. Yet, according to industry insiders, these talks are still ongoing, indicating that the timeline for introducing this revolutionary display technology might slip further into the future, perhaps not seeing the light of day until at least 2027.

This delay isn’t just about technical challenges; it’s also about maintaining Apple’s reputation for quality and innovation. The company has always prioritized user experience, which means any new technology must be robust, reliable, and ready for the mass market. Until these conditions are met, the zero-bezel iPhone remains a tantalizing yet distant prospect.
For now, fans of Apple’s design philosophy will have to wait a little longer to see if the company can pull off this next big leap in smartphone aesthetics. While smaller bezels continue to be a trend, the truly bezel-less iPhone might still be a few years away, keeping us all in suspense until Apple can turn its vision into reality.
