Apple continues to expand the boundaries of what its wearables can achieve, with rumors suggesting that the next iteration of the Apple Watch Ultra, possibly arriving in 2025, may support satellite texting and blood pressure monitoring. These features could redefine the smartwatch’s utility, particularly for adventurers and health-conscious users.

Mark Gurman from Bloomberg reports that the Apple Watch Ultra might gain satellite messaging capabilities, similar to what Apple introduced for iPhones in 2022. This feature allows users to send text messages even in remote areas without Wi-Fi or cellular connectivity. Leveraging Apple’s partnership with Globalstar, this could make the Ultra a valuable tool for hikers, climbers, and travelers who frequent areas with limited network coverage. While Garmin devices like the inReach Mini still dominate with their extensive battery life and GPS features, an all-in-one device like the Ultra could appeal to those seeking a simpler, integrated solution.

The addition of blood pressure monitoring to the Apple Watch Ultra is also on the horizon, potentially debuting across Apple Watch models. This long-rumored feature wouldn’t provide clinical-grade readings but could alert users to hypertension risks. Despite initial plans for a 2024 launch, development delays have pushed the expected release to 2025. The technology aligns with Apple’s focus on preventative health, much like its current sleep apnea detection and heart monitoring features.

In a significant hardware update, some models of the next Apple Watch are expected to swap out Intel modems for MediaTek components. This aligns with Apple’s strategy to diversify suppliers and improve efficiency. Notably, the inclusion of 5G RedCap technology could optimize battery life and cost, making the Ultra even more practical for wearables.

Despite these exciting prospects, Apple faces challenges. Its wearables business has seen slower sales in recent years, partly due to a lack of groundbreaking updates. Features like satellite texting and blood pressure monitoring could reignite interest, but execution will be key. Competitors like Garmin still offer unmatched battery life and niche features that cater to outdoor enthusiasts.

In summary, the potential additions to the next Apple Watch Ultra reflect Apple’s broader strategy to position its devices as indispensable tools for health and connectivity. While questions remain about execution and timing, these innovations could make the Ultra a must-have for tech-savvy explorers and fitness fans alike.
