How to use your Apple Watch to calculate tips and split checks
SHARE

Tucked away in the pre-installed apps on the Apple Watch is a handy feature that can simplify two awkward parts of dining out — figuring out how much to tip and dividing up the check. As reported by The Independent, the Apple Watch’s calculator app allows users to add tips and split bills between multiple people easily.

When you open up the calculator app and input the total bill amount, you’ll notice a “TIP” button. Tap this to add a default 20% tip to the total, or scroll the digital crown to select a custom tip amount between 1% and 100%. The calculator will instantly add this tip amount and provide an updated total bill.

Going out with friends and wanting to divvy up the bill? The “PEOPLE” button lets you input the number in your party (up to 50) and shows each person’s share including tip. Apple notes in their support site, “You see the tip amount, the total amount, and how much each person owes if the bill is split evenly.“

While this built-in tip and bill splitter remove much of the math headache after a meal, it doesn’t necessarily mean people will tip the recommended 20% amount. According to a Pew Research Center survey on tipping culture, barely half of Americans always tip the standard percentage at a sit-down restaurant. And most people feel increased pressure to tip at more establishments than several years ago. This phenomenon, dubbed “tipflation,” has caused frustration for many consumers.

Still, for those looking to breeze through the tricky money matters at the end of a meal, letting your Apple Watch handle the calculations for you can make splitting checks less of a chore. Just don’t use its tip suggestions as an excuse to undertip your hardworking server.
