In the past week, a growing number of Apple Watch users have been grappling with an unexpected problem: their beloved timepieces are running out of juice much faster than usual following the installation of the latest watchOS version 10.1. The good news is that Apple has officially recognized this issue in an internal communication revealed by MacRumors. The even better news is that a solution is on the way and will be delivered through an upcoming update.
This battery drain problem isn’t picky about which Apple Watch it affects; it’s causing trouble across various models, from the older Watch SE and Watch Series 5 to the brand-new Apple Watch Ultra 2. Reports of this issue have flooded in from sources such as Reddit, Apple’s Support Community, and X/Twitter, underlining the widespread nature of the problem. Users are understandably frustrated, with one individual reporting that their Apple Watch went from 100% to a mere 50% charge in less than an hour after the watchOS 10.1 update.
Apple initially attempted to address the issue with its iOS 17.1 update. They claimed to have resolved a problem related to “increased power consumption” when an Apple Watch running watchOS 10.1 is paired with an iPhone using iOS 17, as reported by MacRumors. Unfortunately, this patch doesn’t appear to have completely fixed the problem.
In response to the mounting user complaints, Apple issued a memo stating that they are diligently working on a fix, which will be included in an upcoming watchOS update. However, they didn’t specify a release date or delve into the particular models affected or the root cause of the issue. Given the severity of the problem, one can only hope that it’s a high-priority item on Apple’s to-do list. It’s worth noting that Apple is reportedly preparing to release iOS 17.1.1 for the iPhone, so it’s possible that a watchOS 10.1.1 update might accompany it to finally resolve this troublesome battery drain issue.
