Apple has unveiled visionOS 2, the next iteration of its operating system designed specifically for the Vision Pro mixed reality headset. This update brings a significant range of improvements, including a revamped homescreen experience, intuitive hand gestures, and a groundbreaking ultrawide virtual display feature.

For those yearning for more control over their virtual space, visionOS 2 brings the ability to rearrange apps on the homescreen. This long-awaited feature allows users to customize their layout with iPad and iPhone apps alongside native Vision Pro applications. Additionally, Apple introduces new hand gestures for a more intuitive experience. Summoning the homescreen, accessing the Control Center, and checking vitals like battery life or time become effortless with a flick of the wrist, similar to glancing at your watch. Sharing the Vision Pro with friends and family becomes seamless too, with guest user data like hand and eye positions being saved for 30 days.

Productivity enthusiasts will rejoice at the introduction of the ultrawide virtual display feature. By connecting a Vision Pro to a Mac, users can generate a stunning dual 4K-equivalent curved display, vastly exceeding the current 5K single-monitor limit. This innovation brings the Vision Pro closer to replicating a traditional desktop workspace within a virtual environment.

Photographers and content creators will be thrilled with the ability to convert any image in the Photos app to a spatial photo. This update unlocks a new dimension of storytelling, allowing users to transform existing photos into immersive 3D experiences. Furthermore, visionOS 2 introduces SharePlay functionality to the Photos app. This enables users to collaborate with other Vision Pro owners using Spatial Personas, a feature that brings a ghostly digital representation of your friend directly into your virtual space. Imagine co-editing documents or watching videos together in a shared 3D environment – a truly remarkable feat of technology.

Apple is addressing the limited selection of native Vision Pro apps by introducing the ability to watch web video players independently of the Safari browser. This opens doors for popular platforms like YouTube, Netflix, and Amazon to be accessed directly within the headset, even if they haven’t released dedicated Vision Pro apps yet. Additionally, the Apple TV app now supports multi-streaming, allowing sports fans to enjoy up to five games simultaneously. Users can also leverage AirPlay to seamlessly stream content from their iPhone, iPad, or Mac directly to the Vision Pro.

The initial excitement surrounding Apple Immersive videos might have faded due to the limited content library. However, visionOS 2 promises a brighter future. Red Bull is jumping on board with a new immersive sports series, while Apple itself is venturing into creating its first scripted immersive feature. These developments signal a growing commitment to enriching the immersive content landscape.

Apple is bolstering the Vision Pro ecosystem with exciting announcements from prominent third-party players. Blackmagic Design unveils the first-ever commercially available camera system specifically designed for capturing immersive content. Additionally, DaVinci Resolve Studio receives an update to seamlessly integrate with Immersive Video editing. Canon joins the party with a new spatial lens for the EOS R7 camera, catering to the growing demand for content creation tailored for the Vision Pro.

The wait is finally over for those residing outside the US. Apple is commencing pre-orders for the Vision Pro in China, Hong Kong, Japan, and Singapore starting June 13th. The headset will be officially available in these regions by June 28th. Pre-orders for Australia, Canada, France, Germany, and the UK will begin on June 28th, with the official launch scheduled for July 12th.

While the Vision Pro remains a first-generation product, Apple’s dedication to continuous improvement is evident in visionOS 2. The revamped homescreen, intuitive gestures, and groundbreaking ultrawide virtual display solidify Vision Pro’s position as a powerful productivity tool and a versatile platform for content creation. With the influx of new features and expanding third-party support, the future of spatial computing with the Vision Pro appears to be bright.
