Apple today released Xcode 15.2, its integrated development environment (IDE) for creating iOS, iPadOS, macOS, watchOS, and tvOS apps. The key new feature in this update is support for the visionOS SDK, allowing developers to build applications for Apple’s upcoming Apple Vision Pro head-mounted augmented reality device.
This critical Xcode update paves the way for a robust app ecosystem on Apple Vision Pro when the $3,499 wearable starts shipping on February 2nd. Until now, access to the Vision Pro software development kit (SDK) was limited to select developers with special prototype hardware loans. Xcode 15.2 brings Vision Pro app development capabilities to the masses weeks before launch.
Developers can now submit their Vision Pro apps to the App Store for review ahead of the Vision Pro launch on February 2nd. Apple Stores will also begin offering customers a hands-on Vision Pro demo on launch day for those eager to experience the promise of augmented reality before committing to the premium $3,499 price point.
