For years, Apple TV users have been longing for the ability to surf the web directly on their big screens. While the device has become a powerful entertainment hub, the absence of a built-in web browser has been a notable omission. That’s all set to change with the upcoming tvOS 18.
A recent discovery (spotted by Sigmund Judge) in the latest developer beta suggests Apple is finally opening a door to the internet from the comfort of your couch. The method might be unexpected, though. Rather than introducing a full-fledged browser, Apple seems to be taking a more gradual approach.
The company is leveraging its Immersive Videos – high-resolution, 3D experiences designed for the Apple Vision Pro – as a testing ground for this new feature. A new button in the description of these videos allows users to learn more about the Vision Pro. Intriguingly, instead of loading the webpage directly on the Apple TV, the link is cleverly redirected to the user’s iPhone or iPad via AirDrop.

While this initial implementation might seem limited, it hints at a broader strategy. It’s conceivable that Apple could eventually expand this capability to other parts of tvOS, allowing users to share content, explore related information, or simply browse the web from their living room.
Beyond this exciting addition, tvOS 18 is packed with other improvements. Features like Smart Subtitles, expanded aspect ratio support, and a redesigned Apple Fitness+ app are just a few of the enhancements in store.
While we’ll have to wait until this fall for the official release, the developer beta is already generating buzz among tech enthusiasts.
