At the iconic Apple Store, a new ritual unfolds behind the scenes each time a software update arrives for the iPhone. It’s a dance of efficiency and customer-centric thinking, orchestrated by a cleverly designed system aptly named “Presto.” This system promises to elevate the in-store experience, ensuring that every new iPhone leaves the store brimming with the latest software enhancements.
Picture this: You’re a customer, gleefully clutching your newly purchased iPhone, only to realize that a software update was released overnight. Ordinarily, this would mean an agonizing wait as the store’s Wi-Fi labors to download and install the update. But with Presto, those days of twiddling your thumbs are over.
Presto is a sophisticated locker system that bears a passing resemblance to a toaster – albeit one devoid of crumbs or Pop Tarts. Powered by a Mac mini, each tray in the locker can accommodate up to six iPhones simultaneously, awaiting their software rejuvenation.

The process is as ingenious as it is streamlined. An unsold, still-sealed iPhone box is placed in one of the trays, and the magic begins. Presto awakens the device, forces it to update its software, and then powers it down again, all without ever breaching the sanctity of its packaging.
But Presto is more than just a glorified toaster oven for iPhones. It’s a comprehensive inventory management system that keeps a watchful eye on the store’s stock. As iGeneration reports, “The system also lets staff know which phones still need to be updated, and checks daily sales records to determine how many need to be prepped the next day.”
Presto’s intelligence extends even further. By accounting for the store’s sales forecasts, it can determine which iPhones should be plucked from the stock for processing, ensuring a steady supply of up-to-date devices. The iGeneration report elaborates, “Its content takes into account the store’s sales forecasts to choose the iPhones to take out of stock for processing. The team is constantly aware throughout the day of how many iPhones they need to go through Presto and which ones have been through Presto.”
And when a new software update arrives, one that hasn’t yet graced the stock, Presto automatically flags the need for a mass update, ensuring that every iPhone receives its due diligence.
Teamwork is integral to this well-oiled machine. Even Apple staff members who aren’t formally trained on the Presto system can contribute. When an iPhone has been updated, its status LED glows green, signaling to any team member that it’s ready to be removed and added to the updated stock.
