Apple‘s latest update introduces a feature that allows users to remove objects or people from their photos. While this might seem like a handy tool, it raises questions about transparency and the potential for misuse.
One of the most significant additions to iOS 18.1 is the Clean Up feature, which leverages AI to remove unwanted elements from images. However, Apple has taken a cautious approach to this technology. To ensure transparency, the company has implemented a labeling system that indicates when a photo has been edited using Clean Up.
While the label is a step in the right direction, it’s easy to overlook. It’s only visible on Apple devices running the latest beta versions of iOS 18.1, iPadOS 18.1, and macOS 15.1. Moreover, the label is hidden within the additional information provided by the Photos app, making it less than obvious to the average user.

Sharing photos via messaging apps like WhatsApp and Telegram can further obscure the Clean Up label. While the label is preserved when sharing via AirDrop or iMessage, it’s lost when using other platforms. This raises concerns about the potential for manipulated images to spread without proper attribution.
Apple’s decision to label photos edited with Clean Up is a commendable step towards transparency. However, there is still room for improvement. The company should make the label more prominent and accessible to users. Additionally, providing a way for third-party apps to detect and keep the tag on photos would further enhance transparency and accountability.
