Apple‘s annual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) unveiled a significant update to Siri, its virtual assistant. Partnering with OpenAI, Apple is integrating ChatGPT, the popular large language model, directly into Siri. This move marks a major step for Apple in the race to incorporate advanced AI functionalities into its devices.

The announcement, made during the WWDC 2024 keynote on Monday, emphasizes accessibility and user privacy. Here’s what you need to know:

  • Free and account-free ChatGPT access: Starting later this year with iOS 18 and macOS Sequoia, users will be able to interact with ChatGPT through Siri without creating an account. This is a significant departure from the current subscription model of ChatGPT.
  • Enhanced user privacy: Apple assures users that their queries directed towards ChatGPT will not be logged. This aligns with Apple’s long-standing focus on user privacy and data security.
  • Seamless integration: ChatGPT won’t just be a standalone feature within Siri. It will also be woven into Apple’s system-wide writing tools. This means users can leverage ChatGPT’s capabilities for tasks like composing emails, crafting documents, and potentially even proofreading content.
  • Premium features for paid subscribers: OpenAI subscribers won’t be left out. They can connect their accounts to unlock additional functionalities within the Apple ecosystem.

The collaboration between Apple and OpenAI prioritizes user control. As explained by both companies, users will be prompted before any information, including documents or photos, is sent to ChatGPT for processing. Siri will then present the response directly to the user.

This partnership comes after speculations about Apple seeking collaborations with AI giants like Google and OpenAI. Securing the deal with OpenAI signifies Apple’s commitment to elevate Siri’s capabilities and compete with similar offerings from other tech leaders.

The inclusion of ChatGPT is just one piece of the puzzle. Apple also unveiled its own suite of AI features under the umbrella term “Apple Intelligence.” These additional functionalities are yet to be detailed, but they hint at a broader strategy for Apple to solidify its position in the AI landscape.

With the free integration of ChatGPT and the introduction of Apple Intelligence, Apple appears to be making a strong push towards a more intelligent and user-friendly future for its products. The coming months will reveal more details about both ChatGPT’s functionality within Siri and the specific features encompassed within Apple Intelligence.
