Apple continues to push the boundaries of innovation with its next-generation AirPods Pro, rumored to include new health features. According to Bloomberg‘s renowned technology journalist Mark Gurman, the tech giant plans to equip its popular wireless earbuds with a built-in temperature sensor and the ability to conduct hearing tests. This exciting development aims to enhance users’ auditory experience and further establish AirPods Pro as a versatile health companion. Additionally, Apple is reportedly exploring the potential for AirPods Pro to serve as a hearing aid, following recent regulatory changes. While these advancements are still on the horizon, consumers can anticipate immediate updates, including a USB-C charging case and software enhancements.

The prospect of AirPods Pro conducting hearing tests represents a significant leap forward in audio technology. Presently, AirPods users can leverage third-party applications like Mimi to generate audiogram profiles, enabling iOS to fine-tune audio output based on individual hearing capabilities. However, Apple’s plan to introduce an integrated hearing test would eliminate the need for external apps, streamlining the process and providing a more seamless user experience. This move aligns with Apple’s history of absorbing successful features pioneered by third-party developers, commonly known as “Sherlocking.”

In a bid to cater to the growing demand for accessible hearing aid solutions, Apple is actively exploring opportunities to position AirPods Pro as an over-the-counter hearing aid option. Following the FDA’s recent easing of regulations in this space, Apple has reportedly recruited engineers experienced in traditional hearing aid development to spearhead this initiative. By leveraging its expertise in audio technology and user-centric design, Apple aims to deliver a hearing aid experience that combines style, functionality, and convenience.

Another groundbreaking feature Apple intends to integrate into AirPods Pro is a built-in temperature sensor. Originally introduced in Apple’s Watch Series 8 and Watch Ultra, this innovation allows for more precise body temperature measurements. By leveraging the ear canal’s proximity to the body’s core, the sensor can provide accurate temperature readings. This advancement holds immense potential for health monitoring, especially during strenuous physical activities, as the ear canal often provides more consistent temperature data compared to the wrist.

Although these revolutionary features are highly anticipated, Gurman cautions that their implementation may still be several months or even years away. In the immediate future, Apple plans to update the AirPods Pro by introducing a USB-C charging case, aligning with the EU’s common charging standard and transitioning away from Lightning connectors. However, it is unlikely that Apple will release an entirely new iteration of the AirPods Pro so soon after the recent refresh. Nevertheless, AirPods users can look forward to several software enhancements accompanying the launch of iOS 17. These include new functionalities such as a dedicated button to mute calls and improved device switching, aimed at providing a more seamless user experience.

In an effort to strengthen its position in the market, Apple may permanently reduce the price of its second-generation AirPods to $99 from $129, making them more competitive against budget-friendly alternatives from Samsung, Sony, and Amazon. By offering a lower-cost option, Apple aims to appeal to a broader consumer base, further solidifying its dominance in the audio accessory market.
