Getting stuck on the side of a remote highway or rural backroad with car troubles used to mean relying solely on the kindness of passing strangers. But now, thanks to a recent software update that expands emergency roadside assistance options, iPhone 14 and iPhone 15 users have a high-tech way to call for help even in areas with no cell service.
Apple has partnered with Verizon to allow their latest iPhone models to tap into Verizon’s roadside assistance program using satellite connectivity. This new feature is available on iPhones running iOS 17.2 or later that have an active Verizon SIM card installed.
Verizon’s roadside assistance includes services like vehicle towing, winching, jump starts, tire changes, fuel delivery and more. The program is run by Signature Motor Club, an auto services company owned by insurance giant Allstate, so users can expect reliable help from experienced roadside assistance pros.
While Verizon customers can pay a monthly $4.99 subscription fee to access roadside assistance, the satellite-powered iPhone option also allows iPhone users without a subscription to pay per-service fees. This means that even non-Verizon customers can call for emergency aid.
The iPhone’s satellite features were originally focused on emergency SOS contacts with emergency service providers like 911. However, Apple has been actively building out partnerships to expand utility. Earlier this year, they teamed up with AAA to provide similar satellite-enabled roadside help to AAA members.
However, that AAA partnership requires a paid membership account in addition to owning one of Apple’s premium smartphones. This new Verizon integration essentially removes the AAA gatekeeper, allowing any stranded motorist with an iPhone 14 or 15 to wave to the skies for roadside salvation.
So next time your car sputters to a stop in the middle of nowhere, no need to despair. Your iPhone now has enough power to send an SOS beyond the nearest cell tower for emergency roadside deliverance. Just open up your settings, enable satellite connectivity if needed, and wave your device to the heavens. Help is just beyond the stratosphere.
