Almost five years after the controversy emerged, Apple is finally compensating customers affected by the so-called ‘batterygate’ scandal with payout checks up to $92.17, according to multiple reports.
The tech giant found itself in hot water back in 2017 when an iOS update was found to throttle performance on iPhones with older batteries deliberately. Apple claimed it was done to prevent unexpected shutdowns as batteries deteriorated, but critics accused it of nudging users to upgrade their devices earlier than necessary.
A series of class action lawsuits ensued, alleging that Apple’s lack of transparency around the throttling drove unnecessary upgrades and repairs. After years of legal wrangling, Apple agreed to a settlement in 2020, promising payments to all customers with affected devices.
This week, the saga appears to have finally drawn to a close as settlement checks hit bank accounts. Recipients report payouts of $92.17, exceeding the originally estimated $65 per claim. The compensation covers iPhone 6, 6 Plus, 6S, 6S Plus, 7, 7 Plus and original iPhone SE models that ran the controversial iOS 10 update.
While the payments may seem relatively small, the blow to Apple’s reputation has been more severe and long-lasting. The Batterygate episode highlighted criticisms that the company deliberately shortens its devices’ lifespans to boost sales. Apple has since made efforts to improve transparency and longevity across its product lines.
For now, the checks offer some overdue compensation for customers impacted by batterygate. However, the scandal has compelled Apple to rethink its sustainability practices and restore trust in how it manages device performance over time.
