Just when you thought iPhone screens couldn’t get any bigger, Apple looks set to push the boundaries even further with its upcoming iPhone 16 lineup. According to the Korean publication SisaJournal, Apple is planning to deploy an innovative “ultra-thin bezel” technology that could maximize the displayable area on all four iPhone 16 models.

The secret sauce behind this display real estate expansion? A cutting-edge technique called Border Reduction Structure (BRS). By tightly rolling up the internal copper wiring into a more compact package, BRS enables Apple to shrink those pesky bezels to an absolute minimum – particularly the bottom bezel that has long been a point of contention for many iPhone users.

But Apple’s quest for a truly borderless iPhone display is not a new endeavor. The company has reportedly attempted to implement similar technologies in the past, only to be thwarted by thermal issues arising from the compact internal design. This time around, however, Apple seems confident that recent advancements in heat dissipation will finally allow it to overcome those hurdles.

The Cupertino-based company has been steadily chipping away at bezel sizes with each iPhone iteration. Just last year, the iPhone 15 Pro models saw their display borders trimmed down to a mere 1.5 millimeters, thanks to a low-injection pressure over-molding (LIPO) technique. But if the BRS rumors prove true, the iPhone 16 series could take this pursuit of an uninterrupted display to unprecedented heights.

So, what exactly can we expect in terms of screen real estate? Multiple sources suggest that the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max will boast display sizes of approximately 6.3 inches and 6.9 inches, respectively – a notable increase over their iPhone 15 Pro counterparts. To put some hard numbers on it, the iPhone 16 Pro is rumored to sport a 6.27-inch display (159.31 mm), while the iPhone 16 Pro Max could flaunt an even more expansive 6.85-inch (174.06 mm) screen.

This expansion of the display area won’t come without consequences, however. To accommodate the larger panels, Apple will need to slightly increase the overall dimensions of the iPhone 16 Pro models, making them both taller and wider than their predecessors. But this design trade-off could pay dividends in terms of internal real estate, potentially allowing for larger, longer-lasting batteries or other component upgrades.

The standard iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus models, on the other hand, are expected to maintain the same display sizes as their iPhone 15 counterparts – at least for now. Rumors suggest that Apple may bring the larger 6.27- and 6.86-inch display sizes to its entire iPhone lineup with the iPhone 17 series in 2025.
