In a quiet update, Apple has released new cases for its latest iPhone 15 lineup, but the controversial FineWoven material is noticeably absent from this release. Instead, the company has opted for silicone cases in a range of fresh colors, including soft mint, sunshine, light blue, and pink.
The new silicone cases boast a “silky, soft-touch finish,” according to Apple, with a microfiber lining on the interior for added protection. Embedded magnets ensure a “magical attach experience” and faster wireless charging when paired with the iPhone 15 Plus. These cases are available for purchase now, with wider availability expected in the coming days.
The lack of new FineWoven iPhone 15 cases in this update is a telling sign of the ongoing issues surrounding the controversial material. Introduced last year, the FineWoven cases were touted by Apple as a durable, suede-like alternative to leather, made from 68 percent post-consumer recycled content and boasting significantly reduced carbon emissions.
The issues with the FineWoven cases have not gone unnoticed. Recently, 9to5Mac reported that Amazon had added a “Frequently Returned Item” warning to the product listing, advising potential buyers to read customer reviews carefully before making a purchase.
Apple’s decision to omit FineWoven cases from this latest release could signal a shift in strategy, at least temporarily. The company may be taking a step back to reassess the material’s issues and explore potential solutions, such as a second-generation FineWoven with improved water resistance or a different material altogether.
While the future of FineWoven accessories like AirTag keychains and Apple Watch bands remains uncertain, Apple’s move to prioritize the tried-and-true silicone cases suggests a desire to avoid further customer dissatisfaction and negative publicity surrounding the controversial material.
