Apple‘s virtual assistant, Siri, is about to get a major upgrade, and it might just change the way you interact with your iPhone. According to a Bloomberg report, Apple is planning a significant AI (Artificial Intelligence) update for Siri that will allow you to control specific features within iPhone apps using just your voice. This revamped Siri is expected to arrive in 2025 as part of an update to iOS 18.
The report details how this new Siri will be able to analyze activity on your phone and automatically turn on Siri-controlled features. Initially, you’ll only be able to use Siri to control features in Apple’s own apps, but that’s just the beginning. Bloomberg claims Apple is aiming to support “hundreds” of voice commands within its apps.
While Siri will only be able to handle one command at a time for now, Apple plans for the future include allowing Siri to tackle multiple tasks in a single request. Imagine asking Siri to summarize a recorded meeting and then send it to a friend – that level of convenience is what Apple is striving for.
Security is a major concern with AI assistants that process information in the cloud. Last month, Bloomberg reported that Apple will focus on handling many AI requests directly on your device. Simpler commands would be processed on your iPhone, while more complex requests would be sent to the cloud. To address privacy worries, rumors suggest Apple has partnered with OpenAI and will leverage the security of its M2 Ultra chips with Secure Enclave technology. This would assure users that even data processed remotely is kept as safe as it would be on their device.
These reports align with the whispers we’ve been hearing for weeks. Research papers hint at a major Siri overhaul, while findings from AppleInsider suggest Apple might add the ability to analyze and summarize texts within Messages. AI transcription for Voice Memos and Notes is also reportedly on the table.
While we might not see the full power of the new Siri until next year, Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) on June 10th is bound to give us a sneak peek at what they’ve been working on.
