Apple‘s iconic Infinite Loop retail store, a longtime landmark for Mac enthusiasts and technophiles from around the world, will officially close its doors on January 20th, 2024, marking the end of an era for the company.
Tucked away in a quiet corner of Apple’s sprawling corporate campus in Cupertino, the Infinite Loop store first opened in 1993 under the name “The Company Store.” It was never a typical Apple retail location. In those early days, you wouldn’t find rows of iMacs or shelves stacked with the latest iPods. Instead, The Company Store focused almost exclusively on selling Apple-branded merchandise — t-shirts, mugs, pens and notebooks emblazoned with rainbow Apple logos that fans would snatch up as prized souvenirs.
Over the years, as Apple’s product lineup expanded beyond computers, the store evolved. After renovations in 2015, it reopened with the sleek, modern aesthetic characteristic of Apple retail spaces, with wooden tables displaying some of the company’s newest devices, including iPhones, iPads and Apple Watches. Yet it remained a relatively tiny location, topping out at just over 1,000 square feet. Though smaller than a typical Apple store, Infinite Loop attracted visitors from around the world making a pilgrimage to see the Apple headquarters and soak in a bit of the company’s storied history.
The closure of the Infinite Loop store comes as Apple settles into its stunning new Apple Park headquarters, which opened in 2017 just a couple of miles down the road. The state-of-the-art Apple Park Visitor Center has effectively replaced Infinite Loop as the iconic Apple destination, featuring not only retail shopping but also an impressive rooftop overlook, a cafe and even an augmented reality experience.
Though Infinite Loop may vanish from Apple’s retail footprint, its legacy and charm are sure to live on in the hearts and minds of longtime Apple fans, employees and Cupertino locals. As the doors close one last time next month, the little store could take its proud place in Apple history.
