After years of negotiations and meeting government conditions, Apple is finally opening its first retail store in India on April 18th, located in Mumbai’s Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) at 11 a.m. IST. The Apple BKC store is a reflection of Mumbai’s vibrant culture and has been designed to be one of the most energy-efficient Apple Store locations in the world. It features a dedicated solar array and runs on 100% renewable energy, making it operationally carbon-neutral.

“At Apple, our customers are at the center of everything we do, and our teams are excited to celebrate this wonderful moment with them as we open our first retail store in India,” said Deirdre O’Brien, Apple’s senior vice president of Retail. “Apple BKC brings together the best of Apple in a beautiful, welcoming space for connection and community.”
The store boasts a stunning design that highlights the unique geometry of the location. A triangular handcrafted timber ceiling made up of 408 pieces of timber forms 31 modules per tile, with a total of 1,000 tiles making up the ceiling. There are over 450,000 individual timber elements, all assembled in Delhi, and each tile extends beyond the glass façade to the underside of the exterior canopy.
Upon entering the store, customers are greeted by two stone walls sourced from Rajasthan and a 14-meter-long stainless steel staircase connecting the ground level and the cantilevered mezzanine. The store is staffed by more than 100 team members who collectively speak over 20 languages, ready to welcome customers from around the world.
Apple has been involved in tough negotiations with the Indian government for many years to open its own retail stores in the country. To boost the manufacturing sector in India, the government banned anyone from opening single-brand stores unless a high percentage of the products sold within it was made in India. Apple was finally granted the necessary permits after it significantly increased iPhone assembly within India.
Apple imposed some of its own conditions on the mall company rather than the government, including an exclusion zone around the store where 22 “competing brands” are not allowed to open stores or even display ads.
The opening of Apple BKC in Mumbai is a significant milestone for the tech giant in India, with plans for a store in Delhi to follow soon after. With Apple’s focus on sustainability and innovation in design, the Apple BKC store is not just a retail space but a reflection of the unique culture and vibrancy of India.
