Apple appears to be working on an updated version of its popular Beats Solo on-ear headphones, according to code discovered in the iOS 17.4 release candidate issued yesterday. Images contained in the code provide a first glimpse at the upcoming Beats Solo 4. At first glance, the rendered designs seem nearly identical to the existing Beats Solo 3 headphones released over seven years ago in 2016.
Closer inspection, however, reveals a few subtle tweaks that bring the Solo 4 more in line with the over-ear Beats Studio Pro headphones introduced last year. The shape and silhouette maintain the classic on-ear profile Beats customers have come to expect. But the materials and finishes mirror details found on the Studio Pro series, hinting at a more premium feel.
The leaked iOS code also confirms the new Solo 4 will include support for Spatial Audio with dynamic head tracking. This feature allows music and video audio to feel more immersive, with sounds virtually placed within a spherical sound field. Listeners will likely experience the same impressive spatialization and clarity afforded by the premium Studio Pro model.
The renders depict Solo 4 color options similar to previous versions, including timeless black and bright pops of pink and blue. And while legacy Solo models sported a micro USB charging port, the new iteration conforms to modern tech standards with a more convenient USB-C connector.
Overall, the Beats Solo 4 appears to deliver the iconic Beats on-ear experience millions of customers have enjoyed for over seven years, enhanced with contemporary capabilities like Spatial Audio. The render leaks suggest solo listening sessions will sound better than ever while maintaining the brand’s classic styling inside and out.
This update will mark the first major redesign of the Solo headphones since their initial release in 2016. At that time, Apple issued new colorways but left core functionality and industrial design unchanged. The Beats Solo 4 seems poised to retain the essence of a beloved bestseller while augmenting sonic and feature sets to meet modern consumer expectations. Listeners eagerly anticipating a fresh Solo remix may finally have their wish fulfilled in the near future.
