Engineer and tech enthusiast Ken Pillonel has once again gotten the jump on Apple by creating a USB-C upgrade for the AirPods Max headphones before the company has issued its own revision. In his latest YouTube video, Pillonel demonstrates how to install a custom printed circuit board (PCB) he designed to add USB-C connectivity to the currently Lightning-equipped headphones.
The project required carefully disassembling the AirPods Max and designing a replacement board that would seamlessly integrate into the existing internals. Pillonel managed to add USB-C without altering the exterior or drilling any new holes – an impressive feat of ingenuity and technical skill.
For those eager to upgrade their own AirPods Max, Pillonel has thoughtfully made the USB-C boards available for purchase on his website for around $45. He also provides detailed installation instructions, empowering the DIY audio community to customize their headphones with more modern connectivity. Of course, this is still an intricate hack best attempted only by those comfortable tinkering with expensive electronics.
In considering how to approach the upgrade, Pillonel explored adding USB-C audio support but found the required extra chip would increase cost and complexity. Conveniently, the headphones can still leverage the conversion tech built into modern source devices, allowing his USB-C board to focus solely on power and data transfer.
This isn’t Pillonel’s first rodeo when it comes to augmenting Apple products. Over the last few years, he has created similar USB-C mods for the iPhone, AirPods, and AirPods Pro. Since then, Apple has voluntarily added USB-C to its latest iPhone and AirPods themselves, leaving the over-four-year-old AirPods Max conspicuously equipped with the outdated Lightning port.
Rumors suggest Apple plans to launch a revised version of the AirPods Max this year, likely featuring the expected shift to USB-C. But Pillonel’s ingenuity exemplifies the passionate DIY tech community’s eagerness to customize their gear and push the limits of innovation. Instead of waiting for the tech giants to catch up, they take matters into their own capable hands.
