Amazon is expanding beyond its budget-focused Fire tablet lineup with three new Android tablets built around its Alexa+ AI assistant. Announced on October 8, the new Amazon Alexa Tablet 8, Alexa Tablet 11, and Alexa Tablet 12 Pro feature aluminum designs, access to the Google Play Store, and integrated AI features, with prices starting at $229.99.

The launch marks a significant shift for Amazon’s tablet business. Rather than relying on its Fire OS platform and Amazon Appstore, the company is introducing a new tablet family that runs Android and supports popular Google apps, including YouTube, Gmail, Google Docs, and Netflix. Amazon’s own services, such as Prime Video, Kindle, Audible, and Amazon Music, are also built in.

All three tablets are available to order through Amazon, with shipping scheduled to begin October 14 in the US, Canada, and Mexico. The company has also announced a separate lineup of new Amazon Kids tablets.

Amazon Alexa Tablet 12 Pro targets productivity and entertainment

The flagship Amazon Alexa Tablet 12 Pro is designed for users who want a larger screen for work, entertainment, and reading. It features a 12-inch display with a 3:2 aspect ratio, a pixel density of 280 pixels per inch, and a refresh rate of up to 120Hz. The tablet measures 6.5mm thick and uses an aluminum unibody design.

Amazon offers two display options: a standard vibrant screen and a Nanomatte version designed to reduce reflections. Developed with Corning, the Nanomatte display uses a precision-etched glass surface to reduce glare while preserving text clarity and color detail. That could make the tablet more comfortable to use in bright rooms or outdoors.

Under the hood, the 12 Pro uses a 4nm, eight-core processor and offers up to 16GB of RAM, depending on the configuration. Amazon claims it delivers nearly three times the processing performance and nine times the graphics performance of any tablet the company has previously shipped. Those comparisons are Amazon’s own claims rather than independent benchmark results.

Other hardware highlights include four Dolby Atmos speakers, Wi-Fi 6E connectivity, and up to 16 hours of video playback, according to Amazon.

The tablet also supports two optional accessories aimed at productivity. The Amazon Alexa Tablet Pro Pen is a USI 2.0 stylus with 4,096 levels of pressure sensitivity, tilt detection, magnetic docking, and wireless charging. The Pro Keyboard attaches magnetically, allowing users to work with multiple windows and use the tablet in a laptop-like setup.

The Nanomatte display may be particularly appealing to people who read or write for extended periods, while the keyboard and stylus provide additional flexibility for note-taking, document editing, and other tasks.

Alexa+ is central to the new tablet experience

Alexa+ is integrated throughout the new tablet lineup rather than being limited to a standalone assistant app. Users can call up the assistant by voice or tap the Ask Alexa button to get answers, control compatible smart-home devices, receive recommendations, and perform other tasks.

Amazon is also introducing a personalized home-screen experience. A For You feed brings together content from its entertainment services, while a Dynamic Tab offers recommendations and suggestions based on what users are watching, reading, listening to, and playing.

One of the more notable features is On-Screen Intelligence. When enabled, Alexa+ can interpret the content displayed on the tablet and use that context to answer questions or complete tasks. For example, users can ask the assistant to summarize information from a webpage or extract dates from a schedule and add them to a calendar.

Live sessions allow users to continue a conversation with Alexa without repeating the wake word after every question. Users can also choose to share their screen during a session so the assistant can follow along as the displayed content changes.

Privacy controls are an important part of this experience. Amazon says On-Screen Intelligence features are disabled by default and require users to opt in. A visual indicator appears when Alexa can see the screen, and users can manage or disable the features through Settings.

Kindle reading mode adds a dedicated reading experience

Amazon is also bringing a more focused Kindle reading experience to the new tablets. Opening a book in the Kindle app activates a mode that silences notifications and reduces blue light, helping minimize distractions during reading sessions.

The company says the tablets can deliver up to 20 hours of battery life when used for reading in this mode. Users can choose between three display themes, including warmer colors, a softened paper-like tone, and grayscale.

On the Alexa Tablet 12 Pro, owners can use the Pro Pen to highlight passages, underline text, write notes, and mark up pages. Annotations can also sync with supported Kindle apps and the Kindle Scribe.

The reading mode could give Amazon’s new tablets a distinct advantage for people who want a single device for books, streaming, browsing, and everyday tasks instead of carrying a separate e-reader.

Amazon Alexa Tablet 11 offers a middle ground

The Amazon Alexa Tablet 11 sits between the entry-level model and the flagship Pro. It features an 11-inch 2.5K display with a resolution density of 276 pixels per inch, a 90Hz refresh rate, and a 16:10 aspect ratio suited to watching videos and playing games.

The tablet uses an aluminum body and an eight-core processor paired with 8GB of RAM. It also includes dual Dolby Atmos speakers and is rated for up to 15 hours of video playback.

Like the 12 Pro, the Tablet 11 includes Alexa+, the Dynamic Tab, and the new personalized software experience. However, Amazon has not announced a Nanomatte display option for this model.

The Alexa Tablet 11 is available in Graphite, Amethyst, and Matcha. Its combination of a relatively large screen, stereo speakers, and a lower price than the Pro makes it the entertainment-focused option in the lineup.

Amazon Alexa Tablet 8 prioritizes portability

The Amazon Alexa Tablet 8 is the smallest and most affordable model in the family. Despite its name, it features an 8.7-inch display, along with an aluminum body that weighs 329 grams and measures 7.95mm thick.

Amazon positions the tablet for reading, browsing, and streaming on the go. Its compact size should make it easier to carry around or hold in one hand than the larger models.

The Tablet 8 uses an eight-core processor, supports Wi-Fi 6, and offers up to 14 hours of video playback, according to Amazon. It also includes Alexa+ and the new Kindle reading experience.

The entry-level configuration comes with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage. Color options include Graphite, Rosette, and Teal.

Amazon Alexa Tablet pricing and availability

Amazon is offering three models with different hardware configurations and prices.

Alexa Tablet 11$329.998GB RAM, 64GB storageGraphite, Amethyst, Matcha
Alexa Tablet 12 Pro$499.998GB RAM, 128GB storageGraphite
Alexa Tablet 12 Pro with Nanomatte$549.99Configuration-dependentGraphite

The Alexa Tablet 12 Pro’s optional accessories cost extra. The Pro Keyboard is priced at $149.99, while the Pro Pen costs $89.99.

All three tablets are available to order from Amazon.com, with additional availability through select retail partners, including Best Buy and Target. Shipping begins October 14 in the US, Canada, and Mexico. The lineup is scheduled to begin shipping in the UK, Germany, France, Italy, and Spain on October 19.

With the Alexa Tablet family, Amazon is moving into a more premium part of the tablet market while addressing one of the biggest limitations of its earlier devices: restricted app availability. Android and Google Play Store support give the new models access to a much broader app ecosystem, while Alexa+ and Kindle integration distinguish them from more conventional Android tablets. Whether the combination is compelling will depend on how well Amazon’s software, AI features, and hardware perform in everyday use.
