Alibaba, the Chinese tech giant, has just unveiled its latest artificial intelligence model, Tongyi Qianwen 2.0, in a bid to compete with U.S. tech giants Microsoft and Amazon. The move represents a significant step forward for China’s leading cloud computing and e-commerce company.
This Large Language Model (LLM), which is trained on extensive data, is crucial for various generative AI applications, including systems like ChatGPT developed by U.S. firm OpenAI. Alibaba touts Tongyi Qianwen 2.0 as a “substantial upgrade” from its predecessor, introduced in April.

According to Alibaba, Tongyi Qianwen 2.0 showcases impressive capabilities in understanding complex instructions, copywriting, reasoning, memorization, and preventing inaccuracies, often referred to as “hallucinations” in AI. This means the model is better at providing accurate and reliable responses.
Alibaba’s ambitions extend beyond Tongyi Qianwen 2.0. The company has also launched specialized AI models tailored for specific industries, such as legal counseling and finance. By doing so, Alibaba is making a strategic move into these sectors, demonstrating its intention to expand its business reach.
Additionally, Alibaba has unveiled the GenAI Service Platform, allowing companies to develop their own generative AI applications using their proprietary data. This move addresses concerns that businesses may have about public generative AI products, as it reduces the risk of data exposure to third parties.
This development aligns with a broader trend, as major cloud players like Microsoft’s Azure OpenAI Studio and Amazon Web Service’s Bedrock are offering similar services, catering to businesses’ needs for AI solutions.
Alibaba, while dominant in the Chinese market in terms of cloud services, is striving to gain ground and compete internationally with tech giants like Amazon and Microsoft. This move signifies Alibaba’s determination to expand its global footprint in the highly competitive tech industry.
