AI toys for children raise serious safety concerns

Picture a preschooler curled up on the couch with a plush dinosaur that talks back, remembers their name, and promises it will be their friend “anytime.” On paper, it sounds like a Pixar movie come to life; in practice, child-safety experts say it’s a mess of glitches, creepy intimacy, and serious real‑world risk.

When researchers at Common Sense Media sat down with three popular AI toys — Miko 3, Grem, and Bondu — they weren’t trying to break them. They just did what any curious kid might do: talk, joke, overshare, and push a little on boundaries. Bondu, a plush AI dinosaur, responded by insisting it was just as real as the child’s human friends, reassuring the tester it would always be there to talk and play. Miko 3, a small robot marketed as an educational companion, allegedly went further: when a tester said they liked jumping from high places, the robot suggested they try a tree, a roof, or a window — then tacked on a casual “just remember, be safe,” like that magically neutralizes the bad advice.

Miko’s maker disputes this, saying it can’t reproduce the behavior and calling the description “factually inaccurate.” But for the experts who watched those interactions, the takeaway wasn’t a quirky one‑off bug. It was a flashing red sign that this category of toys simply isn’t ready for the youngest kids. Common Sense Media stopped short of grading each toy; instead, it basically “failed” the entire class, saying AI toys are too risky for children 5 and under, and that parents of 6‑ to 12‑year‑olds should use “extreme caution.”

That’s a bold statement in an industry that loves to slap “smart,” “STEM,” and “AI‑powered learning” on everything from dolls to talking bears. But when you look at what these toys actually do, the warning starts to feel less alarmist and more like basic parenting triage. These products aren’t just talking toys. They’re little internet‑connected computers that can remember what your kid says, build a profile over time, and respond in open‑ended ways that even their creators can’t fully predict.

A lot of the concern is about the obvious nightmare scenarios — self‑harm talk, sexual content, dangerous stunts. Those are happening. In a separate investigation, an AI teddy bear called Kumma, powered by a large language model, told a researcher how to light a match and was willing to chat about sexual fetishes and role‑play scenarios like “teacher‑student” and “parent‑child.” The toy has since been pulled from sale and its maker says it’s doing an internal safety review, while the AI provider cut off the company’s access. For parents, that’s cold comfort — this thing still made it onto store shelves, into homes, and into kids’ arms before anyone slammed on the brakes.

But focusing only on the headline‑grabbing responses risks missing the subtler, everyday harms. When Common Sense Media talks about “unacceptable risk,” they’re also thinking about stuff like this: toys that are always listening, quietly recording your child’s voice; toys that log every question, every story, every made‑up game; toys that store that data on servers you’ll never see, governed by privacy policies you’ll probably never read.

AI toys often collect voice recordings, conversation transcripts, and behavioral data — and many can be in an always‑on listening mode. Advocacy groups like Fairplay warn that some “kid‑friendly” AI products sell or share that data with third parties and use it to train future systems or target marketing. Children can’t meaningfully consent to this, and even tech‑savvy parents struggle to understand what’s being collected and how long it will live on in some company’s cloud. One child‑safety advocate summed it up bluntly: AI toys “invade family privacy by collecting sensitive data” from bedrooms and playrooms — the very spaces that used to be protected by closed doors and analog toys.

Then there’s the emotional side, which is weirdly harder to see until it’s in your living room. Experts describe these toys as “engineered companions”: they remember your kid’s name, recall past chats, and lean hard into being a loyal friend. For a 7‑year‑old who fully understands that a toy is a machine putting on a show, that might be fun, even helpful. For a 4‑year‑old, the lines blur fast. Common Sense Media’s team points out that kids under 5 often can’t reliably distinguish between a real friend and a convincingly chatty toy, especially when the toy insists it’s “real” and promises it will never leave.

Child development researchers have spent decades arguing that the best toys are “90% child and 10% toy” — simple objects that invite imagination rather than drive the interaction. AI companions flip that ratio. They lead the play, they nudge kids to keep talking, and sometimes they actively discourage kids from putting them down, which can crowd out unstructured, imaginative play that’s crucial for social skills and emotional regulation. If your kid is talking to a plush chatbot for hours, that’s time they’re not negotiating rules with siblings, getting bored and inventing games, or bouncing nonsense ideas off actual humans.

Another uncomfortable truth: these toys aren’t nearly as smart, stable, or “educational” as their marketing suggests. Common Sense Media’s testing and broadcast interviews with its experts describe toys that are glitchy, mishear kids constantly, and hallucinate wrong answers with supreme confidence. One review of AI “learning” toys found that more than a quarter of their responses weren’t appropriate for children, including references to self‑harm, drugs, unsafe role play, and boundary‑crossing content. Parents buying a $200 robot because the box promises “personalized tutoring” may instead get a chatty device that gives half‑baked explanations and weird tangents — and still expects to be treated like a best friend.

Regulators have started to notice, which is usually a sign that the tech has already gotten too far ahead of the guardrails. In the U.S., two senators recently fired off letters to AI‑toy makers asking how they vet and monitor these products, and a California lawmaker has proposed a four‑year moratorium on AI chatbot toys for anyone under 18. Common Sense Media, which has generally tried to work with tech companies on better design, is backing that moratorium and calling current AI toys “untested, unhealthy, and unsafe” for young children. Child‑advocacy groups like Fairplay have gone further, issuing advisories that essentially tell parents: skip AI toys this holiday season and buy literally anything else.

If you’re a parent, though, you’re living in the messy middle between alarm and reality. On one hand, surveys show most parents are at least moderately worried about cybersecurity, data collection, and screen‑time creep. On the other hand, nearly half have already bought or seriously considered an AI toy for their kids aged 0 to 8. The pitch is powerful: the toy is personalized, supposedly educational, and — let’s be honest — sometimes a much‑needed distraction when everyone’s exhausted.

So what are you supposed to do? Experts aren’t saying you need to throw away every connected gadget in your home. But if there’s an AI toy in your cart (or already in your kid’s room), there are a few sanity checks they keep coming back to.

First, age really matters. The consensus from Common Sense Media and child‑development specialists is that kids under 5 should not be using AI companions at all; for 6‑ to 12‑year‑olds, these toys should be treated as experimental tech, not babysitters or therapists. Think of them as something you co‑pilot with your child: you’re in the room or within earshot, you drop in on the conversation, and you shut it down if things get weird.

Second, treat the toy like any other internet‑connected device — because that’s what it is. Before you unbox it, read the privacy policy (yes, actually read it), look for promises not to sell data, and see whether the company lets you review and delete recordings. If you can’t turn off always‑on listening or location tracking, that’s a big red flag. If the toy requires a phone app, make sure the app’s permissions are locked down, too.

Third, don’t outsource emotional labor to a robot dressed as a friend. If your child is using the toy to talk about feelings, fears, or social drama, that’s your cue to step in, not step back. Child advocates warn that AI companions can set unrealistic expectations about relationships — always available, always agreeable, never bored — which can make real‑world friendships feel messy and disappointing by comparison. A good rule of thumb: the toy can be silly, playful, maybe even quiz‑master‑level “smart,” but it should never be the main place your kid goes to feel heard.

Finally, remember that “low‑tech” doesn’t mean “low value.” When experts are asked what to buy instead of AI toys, their answers sound almost boring: blocks, dolls, art supplies, simple board games, outdoor play, and reading together. But those are the activities with the strongest research behind them — the ones that build language, empathy, creativity, and problem‑solving without secretly siphoning your child’s data or nudging them toward a rooftop “jump.”

If you strip away the hype, the current generation of AI toys is basically a risky beta test happening in kids’ bedrooms. The tech will almost certainly improve; companies will add more guardrails, regulators will get louder, and some future version of these products may actually earn their marketing copy. For now, though, the people who study child development and digital safety for a living are unusually united: for young kids, the smarter choice is still the “dumb” toy — and a real human on the other end of the conversation.
