If you’ve ever fumbled with a tiny USB-C or Lightning receiver while trying to slap a wireless mic on your phone, you’ll appreciate RØDE’s latest move. The Australian audio outfit has just rolled out a free firmware update for its $149 Wireless Micro system—introducing a neat trick dubbed Direct Connect. Now, you can pair one of those pocket-sized lavalier mics straight to your iPhone over Bluetooth, no receiver dongle required.

First unveiled last November, the Wireless Micro shipped as a two-mic kit: two rechargeable transmitters plus a USB-C (or Lightning) dongle that plugs into your phone. That receiver handled all the heavy lifting—letting you capture both mics simultaneously, with up to 328 feet of wireless range and dedicated controls inside RØDE’s Capture app.

With Direct Connect, RØDE has effectively slimmed down the setup. If you’re shooting a solo vlog, an interview, or a quick social-media clip, you can skip the dongle and just hit “pair” in the Capture app. Your iPhone and the mic talk over Bluetooth LE—simplifying the blitz-and-go workflow that many mobile creators crave.

The catch

  • iOS-only. Android users are still out of luck; the new feature works exclusively on iPhones and iPads.
  • One mic at a time. Direct Connect supports a single transmitter—so you’ll need the full receiver setup if you want both mics live.
  • Shorter range & stability. Bluetooth won’t stretch anywhere near the 328 feet of the dedicated 2.4 GHz link, and it can be a bit flakier in crowded RF environments.

Still, for quick shoots—think on-the-fly interviews or solo walk-and-talks—the trade-off might well be worth it.

RØDE didn’t stop at Bluetooth. The same firmware refresh also ushers in a handful of handy app features:

  • Noise reduction. Toggle background-noise suppression independently on each transmitter—great for on-location shoots where you can’t control ambient sounds.
  • Output gain control. Adjust recording levels in real time, directly in the Capture app—no external mixers or guesswork required.
  • Merged vs. split tracks. When you do use the USB-C/L receiver, you can now choose to capture both mic inputs as one stereo file or record them on separate channels for more nuanced post-production editing.

For many creators—Instagrammers, TikTokkers, indie journalists—the ability to clip on a single transmitter and hit record without fumbling for a dongle is a game-changer. It’s the kind of micro-optimization that speeds up content pipelines and keeps you focused on the story rather than the gear.

Updating is painless: just open the RØDE Capture app on your iPhone (make sure it’s the latest version), plug in your receiver briefly to authorize the update, then eject it and switch to “Direct Connect” in the audio menu.

Who should care?

  • Solo content creators who don’t need two-mic setups on every shoot.
  • Mobile journalists chasing quick soundbites in unpredictable environments.
  • Podcasters & vloggers who prize speed and simplicity over peak range.

If you fall into any of those camps, fire up RØDE Capture, install the update, and enjoy receiverless recording—just don’t toss that dongle in the trash. You’ll still need it for dual-mic setups and for squeezing every last foot of range out of the Wireless Micro.

Whether Direct Connect becomes your go-to mode or a convenient backup, it’s a smart firmware tweak that underscores how far pro-level audio can go on a smartphone.
