The smartphone world is a battlefield, and the big players—Oppo, Xiaomi, and Vivo—are locked in an arms race to build the ultimate camera phone. Each year, they roll out devices that feel like they’re one step away from needing their own tripod, stuffed with massive batteries, sprawling camera modules, and enough lenses to make a professional photographer blush. But with the new Find X8 Ultra, Oppo’s decided to tweak the formula. It’s still a beast, don’t get me wrong, but it’s a beast that’s gone on a bit of a diet—at least when it comes to thickness.

Let’s set the scene. The Find X8 Ultra isn’t exactly what you’d call petite. It’s rocking a 6.82-inch display and tips the scales at 7.97 ounces (that’s 226 grams for the metric crowd). But here’s where it gets interesting: at 8.78mm thick, it’s noticeably slimmer than its arch-rivals, the Xiaomi 15 Ultra and the Vivo X100 Ultra. Sure, there’s a Vivo X200 Ultra lurking on the horizon, but from what’s trickled out so far, it doesn’t look like Vivo’s planning to shave down the waistline anytime soon. Meanwhile, Oppo’s Find X8 Ultra is out here flexing a svelter silhouette without skimping on the specs that matter.

This whole “thinner is better” vibe feels like a subtle rebellion against the trend of Chinese flagships turning into absolute units. These phones—think Xiaomi’s Ultra series or Vivo’s X lineup—are basically the SUVs of the smartphone world: big, bold, and unapologetic. They’ve got circular camera islands that look like they’re ready to launch into orbit, packing in lenses and sensors like it’s a game of Tetris. Oppo’s not abandoning that ethos entirely, but it’s at least trying to keep things a little more manageable. Jeff Jiang, one of Oppo’s product gurus, put it plainly: the goal was to craft a “relatively normal phone” that doesn’t force you to sacrifice killer camera tech for the privilege of slipping it into your jeans pocket.

Speaking of cameras, let’s talk about what’s under the hood—or rather, around the back. The Find X8 Ultra comes armed with four 50-megapixel rear lenses, all tuned by the photography wizards at Hasselblad. You’ve got your standard wide and ultrawide shooters, but the real stars are the dual periscope lenses: a 3x and a 6x, both upgraded with faster apertures for better low-light snaps and sharper zoomed shots. Oppo’s even thrown in a haptic shutter button with touch-sensitive zoom controls—because why just tap when you can feel the photo? There’s also a new customizable shortcut button replacing the old alert slider, giving you quick access to whatever feature you can’t live without. It’s a nice touch, especially for anyone who’s ever fumbled with a touchscreen while trying to nail the perfect shot.

Now, you might be wondering: how do you cram all that into a thinner frame without cutting corners? The answer lies in some clever engineering. Despite its slimmed-down profile, the X8 Ultra packs a monstrous 6,100mAh battery—bigger than anything its rivals are offering. Charging’s no slouch either, with 100W wired and 50W wireless options to juice it up fast. Powering the whole show is Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite, paired with up to 16GB of RAM and a whopping 1TB of storage. Oh, and it’s got IP68 and IP69 ratings, meaning it’ll shrug off dust, water, and even high-pressure sprays like a champ. This thing’s built to last, even if you’re the type who drops their phone in the sink more often than you’d care to admit.

Oppo didn’t stop with the Ultra, though. They also unveiled the Find X8s and X8s Plus, two siblings running on MediaTek’s freshly announced Dimensity 9400 Plus chip. The X8s is the compact one of the bunch, with a 6.3-inch display that’s practically dainty by today’s standards. The X8s Plus, meanwhile, stretches to 6.59 inches and squeezes in a 6,000mAh battery—almost as beefy as the Ultra’s. It’s a solid lineup, but here’s the kicker: if you’re reading this outside China, don’t get too attached. Oppo’s keeping the entire Find X8 series exclusive to its home turf, at least for now. No official word on why, but it’s a safe bet that supply chain logistics, market priorities, or maybe just a desire to dominate domestically are at play.

So, what’s the takeaway? The Find X8 Ultra is Oppo flexing its chops—proving it can keep pace with the Xiaomis and Vivos of the world while nudging the design needle in a slightly different direction. It’s not a radical reinvention, but it doesn’t need to be. In a market where “more” usually means “bigger,” Oppo’s betting that a touch of restraint might just stand out. Whether that gamble pays off will depend on how many people in China are willing to trade a little bulk for a lot of brilliance. For the rest of us? Well, we’ll just have to admire it from afar—or start brushing up on our Mandarin.
