Canon has just rolled out something pretty cool that might make your next livestream a whole lot easier and more dynamic. Introducing the “Live Switcher Mobile” app, which lets you turn your iPhones and iPads into a mini broadcasting studio right in your pocket.
This app is all about wireless multi-device streaming, but there’s a twist – it’s exclusively for iOS users for now. Yes, that’s right, if you’re on Android, you’re out of luck for this one. But what’s even more intriguing is that it doesn’t connect with Canon’s own digital cameras… yet. According to the FAQ, that’s on the roadmap for the future, so stay tuned.
The app is free to download, but like most good things, there’s a catch. The free version limits you to 720p video quality, slaps a watermark on your output, and yes, there are ads – but don’t worry, those are just for you, not your viewers. If you’re looking to step up your game, for $17.99 a month (which racks up to more than $215 annually), you can upgrade to 1080p, say goodbye to ads, and ditch that watermark.
Here’s how it works in practice
One of your devices acts as the host, running the app and controlling the switch between different camera angles or screens. You can connect up to two more devices for additional perspectives or to show off your latest gaming session directly to your audience. Switching between these feeds can be manually done or set to auto-switch every 8 to 20 seconds if you’re hands-free or just want to keep things moving.
For those looking to add some flair, the app lets you throw in picture-in-picture videos for a more engaging stream, and you can overlay text or images for branding or to give your stream that professional touch. Currently, you can stream directly to YouTube and Facebook, with RTMP support for other platforms, but real-time comments are only visible from YouTube and FB.
Now, while it’s not as feature-rich as the free, widely-used OBS Studio, which also supports mobile devices, Canon’s Live Switcher Mobile might just be the simpler, more user-friendly option for influencers dipping their toes into the streaming world.
Looking ahead, Canon has plans to integrate this app with their digital cameras, which could make it a game-changer for on-the-go creators. And who knows, maybe we’ll see a 4K update down the line, making that subscription fee feel like money well spent.
