Google has just announced a significant extension in the software update timeline for some of its older Pixel devices, offering an additional two years of updates for the Pixel 6, Pixel 7, and Pixel Fold series. This means that these models will now receive five years of both OS and security updates, up from the previous three-year limit. The change affects several devices, including the Pixel 6, Pixel 6 Pro, Pixel 6a, Pixel 7, Pixel 7 Pro, Pixel 7a, and Pixel Fold. This extension ensures that these phones will continue to get major updates until 2026 (for Pixel 6 models), 2027 (for Pixel 7 models), and 2028 (for Pixel Fold), providing owners with an even longer lifespan for their devices.

This update was quietly confirmed through changes to Google’s support page. It’s worth noting that this is part of Google’s larger move to extend device support in line with its efforts to push for more sustainable tech. This policy change brings the Pixel 6 and 7 in line with the newer Pixel 8, and Pixel 9 series, which now enjoys seven years of OS updates.
For Pixel users, this is excellent news. Not only does it mean longer access to the latest Android features and security patches, but it also ensures that older Pixel phones stay relevant in the Android ecosystem for a much more extended period.
