Google is making it easier to verify AI-generated information in spreadsheets. Its latest update to Fill with Gemini in Google Sheets introduces cell-level citations for web sources, allowing users to see exactly where Gemini obtained information for individual cells. The update also increases the number of cells Gemini can process in a single request, making the feature more useful for larger data-processing tasks.

Announced on October 28, 2026, the improvements address two practical challenges of using AI inside spreadsheets: verifying generated information and processing large amounts of data without repeatedly running smaller requests.

Gemini now shows sources for individual cells

The biggest addition is cell-level source attribution. Previously, checking the origins of AI-generated information could be less straightforward when working with multiple entries in a spreadsheet. With the new functionality, Gemini provides the exact web sources it referenced directly within each individual cell.

This gives users a more practical way to check AI-generated results. Instead of treating an entire spreadsheet response as one AI-generated output, users can inspect the sources associated with individual values, verify the information, and cross-reference it against the original web material.

The change could be particularly useful for research, data collection, competitive analysis, product comparisons, and spreadsheets containing information gathered from multiple websites.

Google says the citations are available in Google Sheets on the web, giving users direct access to source attribution while reviewing their spreadsheets.

Fill with Gemini can now handle up to 3,000 cells

Alongside source citations, Google is expanding the processing capacity of Fill with Gemini.

The feature can now handle requests involving up to 3,000 cells in a single operation. That is a considerable increase for users who regularly work with large datasets and previously needed to divide their work into smaller requests.

Users can use Gemini to summarize information, categorize entries, and process spreadsheet data across more cells in one go. Google has also upgraded the underlying processing to deliver faster responses and better consistency between cells.

According to Google’s internal study involving 95 participants, Fill with Gemini performed up to 55 times faster than manual entry for a 500-cell task. The study compared manual data entry with Gemini using English prompts and English-language users, so the result should be understood within those specific testing conditions rather than as a universal performance guarantee.

Who can use the new Gemini features?

The updated functionality is rolling out gradually to eligible Google Workspace and Google AI subscribers.

For organizations, availability includes Business Standard, Business Plus, Enterprise Standard, and Enterprise Plus plans. Consumer availability includes Google AI Pro and Google AI Ultra subscriptions. Google AI Pro for Education and AI Expanded Access are also included.

The rollout for Rapid Release and Scheduled Release domains started on October 20, 2026, with feature visibility taking up to 15 days.

Administrators do not need to manually enable the new functionality for eligible users who already have Gemini in Sheets enabled. The feature is available by default under those conditions.

To get started, users can open Google Sheets, select the Ask Gemini spark button in the top-right corner, and access Gemini through the side panel.

With cell-level citations and support for larger requests, Google is making Fill with Gemini more practical for spreadsheet-heavy workflows. The source attribution is particularly meaningful because it gives users a way to check individual AI-generated results rather than simply accepting an entire batch of generated data. It is a useful step toward making AI-assisted spreadsheet work easier to audit and trust.
