Google is giving three of its most frequently used Android apps a visual refresh. Google Messages, Phone by Google, and Google Contacts are getting redesigned app icons, bringing a cleaner appearance and a more consistent visual identity across Google’s growing app ecosystem.
Announced on November 2, 2026, the updated icons introduce subtle gradients, sharper edges, and refreshed shapes and colors. While the changes are relatively small, they give three familiar apps a more polished look on Android home screens.
Google gives three Android apps a fresh look
The redesigned icons cover three essential communication apps: Google Messages, Phone by Google, and Google Contacts.
Google says the updated designs incorporate user feedback, with a focus on making the icons sharper and easier to recognize on home screens. The company has introduced subtle but more defined gradients, along with updated curvature and coloring.
The Phone by Google icon retains its familiar handset symbol, but now features a refreshed blue gradient. Google Messages continues to use its overlapping speech-bubble design, while Google Contacts keeps its recognizable person-shaped symbol. All three receive the updated visual treatment.
The changes also bring the icons closer to the broader design language used across Google’s products, including the company’s core Google logo.
No changes to app functionality
Despite the visual refresh, users shouldn’t expect any new features or changes to how these apps work.
Google explicitly confirms that the redesign is limited to the app icons. Google Messages will continue handling conversations, Phone by Google will retain its calling features, and Google Contacts will continue managing contact information as before.
The rollout starts on November 2, with the redesigned icons expected to appear on users’ home screens over the coming weeks. Google has not provided a specific completion date for the rollout.
For Android users, this is primarily a visual update rather than a functional upgrade. Still, bringing these three everyday apps into closer alignment with Google’s evolving design language helps create a more consistent experience across the platform.
